Elijah and I had been dating for a few days now. Sort of. It was at a comfortable slow pace; testing the waters. Hell on earth would wait for me at my house.
I figured we were being careful. Only my mom knew. She had not accepted it, but she didn't rage at me or say anything. She tolerated my visits to Elijah's house as well.
Tonight he was going to take me home.
"Are you ready?" he asked me. As if he had read my mind, his warm hand held mine as we exited the building. "Yes. Let's go."
"Caesar, where is your...dad?" Elijah asked warily. Dreadful thoughts swarmed me.
My dad had never came up. He was almost old news. He wasn't even in the country. What would he say? "On a work trip..." I swiftly lied as I arrived at my doorstep, a blank black van in my driveway. Elijah must not have noticed the unusual vehicle, because he kissed me goodbye and I went inside.
My mom sat on the old, worn couch, and my dad was beside her. My dad. His face was etched with anger and annoyance. He turned toward me and opened his mouth. I was about to run when my father spoke, interrupting my mother's lecture to him.
"Where the fuck have you been!?" he screamed. "You're supposed to come home when your mom wants!" He scowled and I looked confused. "What? Why are you even here?! I haven't seen you in months!" My face twisted with tears and sadness.
"Seems like you, Caesar boy, have been getting twisted up with the faggots these days" he gestured to the door. My heart sunk. How had he known? How had-
The smirk on my mothers face said enough. I tried to run out to my room, but my dads string hands held me by shirt collar. Fear clanged through me at his expression. He shoved me aside with all of his strength.
"Why am I surprised. You've never had any luck with girls" he flashed me an evil grin, followed by a laugh that shook me to my core. "Your mother told me everything, you know. I came home as fast as I could. Couldn't have my son doing that could I-" I cut him off with a punch to the gut. My weak, bony arms struck as I hit him. Hard.
I ran out fast before he could recover and strangle me to death. My window in my room was the nearest exit— my mom had blocked the door. I grabbed a handful of stuff as my father's scream sounded throughout the house. "CAESAR RANCH SALOME!" he bellowed. I climbed out of the window and ran the only direct I knew. To Elijah's house.
Once I found his street, I bursted into his house, slamming the door hard behind me and panting heavily. The house echoed with my breaths until I felt someone hold me firmly in a hug.
"What happened?"
"He's mad...my Dad. He saw us together and he's home...he knows..." I panted again and he kissed my cheek.
"Oh god...are you alright?"
"Yeah I'll live."
I took a deep breath before sitting against the wall, letting the coldness comfort me. "He came after me. After us" my voice cracked as I spoke. He let go of me and knelt down in front of me.
"It's okay...everything will be okay. Don't worry"
"You don't understand! My mom, of all people, sold me out! She told him! She..." I trailed off with heavy sobs.
"It's going to be okay Caesar. Stay with me. We just started dating. I'm so proud you even had the courage to admit you were gay in the first place. I..." He didn't finish and just kissed me instead, hugging me close. I frowned and clung to him.
