A wave of warmth and the familiar scent of cheese and toasty embraces me as I push the door to the house open while Emma follows behind.

Stepping inside, I found myself enveloped in a sea of colors and decorations that adorned the living room.

Streamers of pink and purple hung from the ceiling, intertwining with balloons in various shades. A banner stretched across the plain wall by the entrance read: "Happy Birthday"

"Yes baby! It's about to go down..." Emma exclaimed in excitement as we both walked further into the house.

My mom and Nana were busy setting the tables while communicating in Spanish. I couldn't help but smile at the sight of them, their faces filled with excitement and love.

" This looks amazing!" I said, my eyes scanning the whole of the house in awe. "Thank you both so much!"

I moved closer to my Nana and she enveloped me in a tight hug, squeezing me with all the love she had. "Don't mention, conejita. It's your birthday"

"Hello, Mrs Cooper. Hello Nana" Emma greeted.

"Hi Emma...How are you?" My mom waved across the table.

"How are you, mi amor?"  Nana asked in her deep accent. "You too...come give me a hug" Nana said, spreading her arms open for Emma. Emma hurriedly came close and wrapped her arms around Nana.

"I'm fine, thank you." Emma smiled.

"Did you both have fun today?"

I nodded. "Yes"

I glanced around the room, taking in the sight of the dining table adorned with an array of delicious dishes. There were plates of homemade lasagna, bowls of fresh salad, and trays of decadent desserts that made my mouth water, and the best of all was the beautiful cheese toasties in the plate that was at the end of the table.

"Do you want us to help with anything?" Emma asked.

"Not at all. You girls should go relax till everything is ready" my mom responded. I would have lied my way out of the kitchen if she had said otherwise, because I really wasn't in the mood to do anything.

"Okay"

We went straight up to my room and when we entered, we both jumped on the bed.

"I had fun today" Emma said. Everyone did except me. Maybe I had a little fun but it wasn't complete because Kent didn't show up. Bryce really tried his best to cheer me up and I was grateful for that.

I brought my phone to my face to check if anything had pop up on the screen, but there was nothing. Not even a single text message or missed call from Kent, nothing.

My heart sank as I stared at the blank screen, my mind racing with worry and doubt. What if something had happened to him? What if he had lost his phone?

Where the heck was he? Why was it difficult to just call me? What was he doing?

I couldn't stop asking myself the same questions repeatedly in my head.

I heaved a deep sigh as I toss my phone on the bed. Lost in thought, I didn't hear Emma talking until I felt her had on my shoulder.

"Why are you quiet?" Emma's asked, her voice gentle and reassuring. "What's wrong?"

"It nothing" I replied in a low tone.

"It doesn't seem like nothing to me. Is it's still about Kent?" Emma asked. "You wouldn't stop checking your phone while we were out and you're still doing that now..."

I guess I must have done that a lot of times that Emma couldn't take it anymore. I just couldn't help. It was my birthday and my boyfriend wasn't anywhere to be found.
