I stood by my bedroom window, watching as the sun slowly dipped below the horizon, casting a warm orange glow over the empty driveway. The sky was painted with hues of purple and pink, a breathtaking sight that usually brought me peace. But today, it only seemed to emphasize the silence that filled the house.
Nana had left earlier in the day. It was mine and Max's birthday that kept her around for so long. And now that it was over, she had to leave. Her usual warm hug and words of encouragement still fresh in my mind. "Keep your chin up, no matter what life throws your way" she had reminded me, just as she always did. Her presence had a way of making me feel safe and loved, but now that she was gone, the house felt eerily quiet.
Emma had also gone home after spending the morning teasing me about Bryce and the flowers he had sent me. Her jokes and laughter had filled the house, but now that she was gone, the silence seemed deafening. Over the night, she was finally able to sort things out with Max, and I hoped they wouldn't go back to hating each other and just be happy.
I glanced at my phone for what felt like the hundredth time that day, hoping to see a notification from Kent—a missed call, a text, anything. But the screen remained stubbornly blank, mocking my impatience. I couldn't help but wonder why he hadn't reached out, and the not knowing was making me restless.
I tried to reassure myself that Kent was probably busy, that there must be a good reason for his silence. But Bryce's words lingered in my mind, refusing to be ignored: "If someone loves you, you shouldn't feel like you're waiting an eternity on them to show up." I shook my head, attempting to shake off the doubt that had taken hold. Bryce didn't know Kent, didn't understand our relationship. Kent cared for me, I was certain of it. Yet, the growing silence between us had me questioning everything.
Frustration got the better of me, and I dialed Kent's number once more. The phone rang, and rang, and rang, but there was no answer. With a sigh, I locked the screen in annoyance and shoved it into my Jean pocket.
Deciding that I couldn't just sit and wait around for him, I grabbed my shoes and stepped out of the room.
I walked down the stairs to the sitting room with my feet making angry noises but I didn't care. It was just my mom in the sitting room reading a book, she was probably taking a break after everything she had done yesterday and today.
She looked at me and took her time to take in my features. "Are you going somewhere?" She asked as she turned her face away from me to the tv.
"Yeah." I nodded. "To Emma's..."
"She's going to see her boyfriend" I heard Max's voice cut me off with an evil chuckle right after and I rolled my eyes.
I remembered Emma telling me on the phone that she and Max had a date fixed for today; so he probably knew I didn't have any plans with Emma.
Was it going to be like this now? I wondered. Max knowing what I was doing with my friend and where we go, I was starting to get pissed and somehow, I regretted I kind of brought those two together.
It wasn't like I didn't like it or I wasn't happy for my friend, I just suddenly hated the fact that it was Max. Now I had to share my best friend with my evil twin brother.
"I'm going to see Emma and...Kent too" I quickly said.
"Oh...Okay" my mom replied. "Speaking of Kent..." mom started to talk again. "He didn't show up for dinner. Didn't you invite him?"
"Uhh...He had something urgent to attend to..." I quickly replied.
"Okay..." My mom said. "Say Hi for me"
"Okay mom"
I looked over at Max who was still having his cunning smirk on and I squinted my eyes at him. I was definitely going to get back at him for what he did, I definitely will.
