Okay, so here's the deal. I thought this whole "family cooking challenge" thing would be fun. I mean, how hard could it be? We were all home, a little tired, and I figured we'd make a simple dinner together. But the moment I proposed it, I realized... this was going to be more of an adventure than I had anticipated.
I turned to Luciano and grinned. "What do you think? A little family challenge?"
He raised an eyebrow, giving me that smirk I knew so well. "As long as there are no explosions, I'm in."
Alessio, sitting on the counter with Hazel in his lap, perked up at the mention of a challenge. "Wait, are we making something cool like pizza or cake?"
I nodded. "Exactly! We're making pizza tonight. And the best part? We're all making our own!"
I had the idea that we'd each make our pizza with our favorite toppings, have some friendly competition, and just have fun with it. But, as usual, things didn't quite go according to plan.
Luciano was, of course, the first to get serious about it. He's used to running a business, making big decisions, handling pressure. So, when it came time to roll out the dough, he looked like a man preparing for war. The concentration on his face was almost too much to handle, especially when he rolled the dough too thin and it kept tearing.
"Don't worry, darling," I teased him as he struggled with his pizza base, "It's not a crime to make a mess. We're supposed to have fun!"
He glared at me but then laughed. "I'll show you fun," he muttered, attempting to salvage his dough.
Meanwhile, Alessio, who's always more about the excitement than the execution, started tossing his dough in the air like he'd seen on TV. Of course, he wasn't as graceful as the chefs on those shows. The dough went flying, and before we knew it, it landed right on top of Hazel's head.
"Hey!" I yelled, trying to stifle my laughter as Hazel giggled, looking more confused than anything else. "No throwing dough at your sister!"
Alessio gave a sheepish grin. "Sorry, Mama! But... it's funny!"
Luciano shook his head, turning to me with a sigh. "This is what happens when you let Alessio near food."
Hazel, with dough stuck to her hair, looked up at Luciano with her big brown eyes and said, "Dada, dough?"
That was it. I burst out laughing. How could I not? Luciano, the serious mafia boss, had become a laughing stock for his son's silly antics and Hazel's adorable little remarks.
"Okay, okay," I said between giggles, wiping a tear from my eye. "We need a plan."
We spent the next hour trying to salvage the pizza-making process, with dough flying everywhere, Alessio adding way too much cheese, and Luciano acting like a perfectionist (which, honestly, made things worse). But somehow, despite the chaos, we managed to get the pizzas into the oven.
When the timer went off, we all eagerly dug into our creations. There was cheese everywhere, toppings half-burnt, and dough that was a little too crispy in spots—but somehow, it was perfect. The whole family, even Hazel with her tiny hands, joined in, taking bites and laughing together.
"This is good!" Alessio said, his mouth full of pizza.
I smiled at Luciano, who was sitting across from me, trying to maintain his usual stoic face, but his eyes betrayed him. He was enjoying it too.
"You know," I said, nudging him, "This was actually a great idea. We should do this more often."
He raised an eyebrow and glanced at our chaotic kitchen. "Maybe just without the dough in the hair next time."
"Agreed," I laughed, taking another bite of my pizza. "But I think we did a good job—chaos and all."
Luciano smiled at me. "I'd say the pizza's only half as good as the company."
I felt my heart warm. Despite the mess, the laughter, the little annoyances, we were perfect. Our own little world, right here in our kitchen. It was moments like these that I truly cherished. Family, laughter, love, and a bit of chaos to make things memorable.
"Alright," Luciano said, standing up to clear the table. "Next time, maybe we can make something less... explosive."
"Don't you dare!" I said with a playful grin. "We're doing this again, and maybe next time, I'll get dough on your head."
He rolled his eyes but couldn't help the smile that tugged at his lips. "Fine, but you're cleaning it up."
And just like that, we spent the rest of the evening eating pizza, making fun of each other, and loving every chaotic second of it. There's never a dull moment in our family, and I wouldn't have it any other way.
