The darkness in Dr. Nelson's bedroom was suffocating, filled with a quiet tension that clung to the walls like a heavy fog. He was sleeping under the effect of his medicine when a shadow slipped inside the room through the window. After a few moments, the shadow stood beside Dr. Nelson and held his hand with a soft grip.
Dr. Nelson felt the grip and opened his eyes.
"Do you remember when you brought me home from your clinic? I used to get scared at night, and you would sit beside me, hold my hand softly, and rub it with all of love and affection. It would make me calm down and go to sleep," the shadow spoke. Dr. Nelson instantly recognized the voice and said, "Mia... is that you?"
"No, it's me, Dr. Rose Wilson," Mia said in a low voice. Her voice was soft and gentle, and she looked at him with love. She was continuously rubbing the back of Dr. Nelson's hand.
"When did you come?" he asked in a trembling voice.
Mia's expression softened momentarily, but there was an icy edge to her words. "A few moments ago," Mia said in the same polite tone.
"How did you come here?" Dr. Nelson asked. "I mean, who opened the door?" He knew that the police were waiting for Mia outside his room, so he wondered how she had passed them and entered his room.
"I came from that window," Mia said plainly.
"Why did you come through the window?" Dr. Nelson asked. Although Mia was calm, he was still getting strange vibes from her. Suddenly, he noticed that Mia's body seemed to glitch; her straight shoulders became bent, and the politeness on her face was replaced by fear. She said, "Because the police are sitting in the living room... so I had to sneak in through the window," her voice soft.
Dr. Nelson looked at Mia's face, which was now showing expressions of fear and uncertainty. She was still holding his hand, but her grip had tightened. Dr. Nelson tried to pull his hand away, but she didn't let go.
"Why did you call the police?" Mia asked, looking into his eyes. She looked like a terrified little girl afraid of the police's presence.
"I didn't call them," Dr. Nelson said in a low voice. He knew Mia's personality had shifted from the polite and gentle Dr. Rose to the terrified Mia, who was still thirteen years old in her mind.
Mia stared into his eyes and said, "You know we cannot lie to each other... so don't try it... and tell me why you called them."
Dr. Nelson exhaled deeply and said, "Because you have gone too far and I had to protect you."
Mia heard the words and started sobbing. Then she said, "You shouldn't have called them... you know I am afraid of them and everyone who tries to come near me." Mia spoke in a thin voice and wiped tears from her face.
Dr. Nelson knew that Mia was under stress and that's why her personalities were switching. Otherwise, she had learned to keep her mind under control and keep her other personalities recessed.
"Mia, why did you kill the ward boy and let Jack come out? Everything was right; why did you spoil everything?" Dr. Nelson said, looking at Mia, who was still sobbing and shivering.
Then, all of a sudden, she raised her head, looked at Dr. Nelson, and her eyes filled with anger. She spoke, "You know why I killed the ward boy... he was calling the police, and I had to take Jack with me to kill Ethan Harris... He was in the city, and we cannot let him live anymore." Mia grunted, and her voice made Dr. Nelson afraid. He knew that the beast inside Mia had awakened.
He looked toward the bell button, which he used to press to call Zack, but before he could reach it, Mia threw it away and said, "Listen to me."
"I am listening to you, Mia." Dr. Nelson said in a low voice.
