❝she cannot find out because of
the paper!❞

april 1912.

Several maids were hurrying through the large house, collecting the newspapers laid in front of the bedrooms to keep them out of sight of one particular person. As far as everyone knew, she was still sleeping soundly in her room, blissfully unaware of the news beginning to circulate Downton Abbey.

"And you're certain she has not come out?" Mr. Carson asked Anna who shook her head, holding a stack of newspapers in her arms. "She is still sleeping?"

"I'm sure, Mr. Carson," Anna confirmed.

He nodded. "Very well," he said solemnly. "I better go inform His Lordship." The butler walked into the dining room, standing beside the table full of food just as Robert Crawley strolled in with a saddened expression on his face.

"Is it true what they're saying, Carson?" he asked the man who nodded.

"I believe so, my lord."

Robert pressed his lips together. "I'm afraid we'll know some people on it," he said, opening the lid on the container of sausages. "And Franny..." He sucked in a breath. "I don't suppose there are any lists of survivors yet?"

"I understand most of the ladies were taken off in time," Mr. Carson told him and Robert glanced at him.

"You mean the ladies in first class?" he corrected the man and Mr. Carson nodded slowly. "God help the poor devils below decks. On their way to a better life."

He took hold of the newspaper and opened it to the first page, the headline staring back at him in big bold letters.

"What a tragedy..."

Mr. Carson looked up just as the two eldest Crawley daughters walked into the room. Edith, the second eldest, reached her father first and glanced over his shoulder at the paper. "When Anna told me, I thought she must have dreamt it."

"Do we know anyone on board?" Mary asked him.

Robert nodded, still reading the article. "Your mother knows the Astors, at least she knows him," he replied softly. "We dined with Lady Rothes last month. There are bound to be others."

"I thought it was supposed to be unsinkable..." Edith said distantly.

"Every mountain is unclimbable until someone climbs it, so every ship is unsinkable until it sinks," Robert quipped while Mr. Carson kept a close eye on the doorway to the dining room.
