The training grounds were alive with anticipation as Aizawa stood at the front of the group, clipboard in hand. Everyone was buzzing about the first official combat exercise, partnerships being one of the main topics of excitement or dread. I leaned casually against the railing, arms crossed, doing my best to ignore the nervous energy around me.
Denki was bouncing on the balls of his feet beside me, practically vibrating. "Okay, okay, hear me out. If we get paired together, we'd be unstoppable. Electric offense and your unshakable defense? Legendary duo!"
"Yeah, yeah, Pikachu," I muttered, smirking. "Just don't zap me if we actually have to work together."
"When, not if," he said with a determined nod, clearly sold on his own plan.
I snorted, glancing at Aizawa as he started calling out pairs.
"Bakugou, Kirishima," he read off, and there were loud whoops from the explosive duo.
"Mina, Jirou."
"Midoriya, Iida."
"Kaminari...""Yes!" Denki fist-pumped, grinning at me.
"...Ashido."
Denki's expression fell like a cartoon character who'd just been hit with an anvil. "Noooooo!"
I snickered as Mina blew him a kiss and danced over to Jirou. "Better luck next time, Sparky."
"And Ryo," Aizawa continued, voice as monotone as ever.
"Here it comes," I said under my breath, not expecting anything too wild.
"Todoroki."
"WHAT?!"
The shout came out louder than I intended, but the betrayal hit me like a truck. I whipped around to glare at my dad. "Sixteen years, and this is how you repay me?! I'm your son, Dad!"
Aizawa didn't even flinch, scratching his head lazily as he flipped a page on the clipboard. "And I'm your teacher, Ryo. Now move."
"This is favoritism," I declared dramatically, jabbing a finger in his direction as I turned to find Todoroki already standing at his assigned station. "Scratch that— anti-favoritism! I'm calling HR after this! I'm more of a 1B kinda dude!"
"Ryosuke." Aizawa's voice dropped in warning.
"Fine," I grumbled, trudging toward Todoroki like a man heading to the gallows.
Todoroki didn't look particularly thrilled either, his neutral expression barely hiding his disdain. "Can we just get through this without you being a distraction?"
I let out a low chuckle. "Relax, Snowflake. I'll stay out of your way if you stay out of mine."
He gave me a flat look. "We're supposed to be working together."
"Yeah, yeah," I muttered, waving him off.
The exercise began with a simulated villain attack—huge robots swarming the area while we had to protect civilians and disable the threat. Todoroki immediately leapt into action, firing off an icy blast that froze a cluster of incoming bots.
"Don't just stand there!" he barked at me.
"I'm analyzing," I said coolly, crossing my arms.
"You're slacking," he shot back, narrowing his eyes.
I smirked, casually strolling forward as Todoroki dealt with another wave of bots. My field of awareness through my quirk let me sense every movement around us, but I wasn't in any rush to show my hand.
One of the robots powered up a massive strike, and I saw Todoroki look at me sharply. "Activate your quirk!" he yelled.
I tilted my head. "What's the magic word?"
"Now!" he shouted, frustration boiling over.
"Hmm, close," I said, watching the robot's arm descend. At the last possible second, I flicked my fingers, and a shimmering barrier snapped into place, nullifying the attack with a loud clang.
Todoroki glared at me, his expression thunderous. "What the hell was that? You could've gotten us crushed!"
"Nah," I said, brushing imaginary dust off my sleeves. "I had it under control."
"You—" He cut himself off with a deep breath, his jaw visibly clenching.
I grinned at him. "Relax, Todoroki. You're starting to sound like my dad."
We pressed on, with Todoroki taking on most of the offensive work while I kept the barriers up at critical moments. The problem was, we weren't exactly cooperating. Every suggestion he made was met with my nonchalant shrugs, and my laid-back demeanor was driving him up the wall.
At one point, Todoroki was nearly backed into a corner by two towering robots. "A little help here, Woods?"
I leaned against a nearby barricade, inspecting my nails. "Oh, you mean now you need me?"
"For the love of—YES!" he snapped.
I rolled my eyes but threw up a barrier that locked both bots in place, rendering them harmless. Todoroki took them out with a swift blast of fire, his glare burning almost as much as his flames.
By the end of the exercise, we were sweaty, bruised, and very much not on the same page. Aizawa stood at the edge of the field, arms crossed as he surveyed the results.
"Ryo, Todoroki," he said, his tone dry. "That was...something."
"You're welcome," I said, ignoring Todoroki's glare.
Aizawa raised an eyebrow at me. "Don't push it, Ryosuke."
"Pushing it is my specialty, Sensei," I said with a cheeky grin.
Todoroki groaned, running a hand through his hair. "Next time, give me anyone else."
I gave him a lazy salute. "Love you too, Snowflake."
As we walked off the field, I could hear Kaminari laughing from the sidelines. "Dude, you're gonna kill him at this rate!"
I smirked, throwing an arm around Kaminari's shoulder. "If I don't kill him first."
