The starting buzzer rang, and chaos broke out instantly. Students bolted across the arena, teams clashing and scrambling to grab as many headbands as possible. I, meanwhile, adjusted my barrier field around our team and took a slow step forward.
"WOODS!" Bakugou yelled, perched on a ledge I'd created just for him inside the barrier. He was already pissed about our plan—or rather, my lack of one. "STOP DRAGGING YOUR FEET! WE NEED HEADBANDS, NOT A WALK IN THE PARK!"
"Relax, Blasty," I said, twirling the edge of my own headband lazily in one hand. "You'll get your points. Just let me do my thing."
"YOUR THING BETTER BE WINNING!"
Kirishima and Sero, holding up the "horses" part of the team, exchanged amused glances. Kirishima gave me a thumbs-up. "We trust you, Woods! Do what you gotta do!"
I sighed dramatically, flexed my fingers, and took a deep breath. "Alright, alright. Let's get this over with."
I adjusted the barrier around us, making it airtight and seamless. The transparent field shimmered faintly, like heat off asphalt, giving us a nice private bubble. It even muted the noise outside—a much-needed perk when Bakugou was screaming every five seconds.
With the barrier secure, I used my quirk's range sense to locate our first target. Midoriya's team was nearby, darting between other groups as they tried to keep their million-point headband safe. Their strategy was solid: Midoriya led the charge, while Tokoyami's Dark Shadow acted as both shield and offense. But strategies don't mean much when you're dealing with me.
I took a casual step toward them, and our entire team floated forward inside the barrier.
"Here we go," I muttered, extending a hand.
With one quick motion, I adjusted the barrier's edge to grab Midoriya's headband, pulling it through the field without even touching him. He flinched, spinning around to figure out what had just happened.
"Wait! What—?!"
"Thanks for this!" I called, holding up the headband for a split second before tucking it into my waistband.
"Woods!" Midoriya's panicked voice carried through the chaos as I retreated back to our corner of the arena, dragging my team along with me.
"Got it, Bakugou," I said, glancing up at him on his makeshift perch.
"TOOK YOU LONG ENOUGH!" he barked, folding his arms but still grinning like a maniac.
"You're welcome," I said, rolling my eyes.
Once back at the edge of the arena, I reinforced the barrier and dropped us all gently onto the ground. Sero and Kirishima immediately sprawled out, grateful for the break.
"This is awesome," Sero said, leaning back against the invisible wall. "It's like we're just hanging out while everyone else does the work."
Kirishima laughed, throwing his hands behind his head. "And we've got Bakugou up there to scare off anyone who tries to mess with us. Perfect plan!"
Bakugou, sitting on his barrier ledge, scanned the field like a hawk. "THIS PLAN SUCKS. IT'S BORING AS HELL."
"Boring works," I said, lying down on my back and crossing my arms behind my head. "We're not disqualified. Nobody can touch us. You're literally sitting on a throne, dude. Live a little."
Bakugou growled something under his breath but didn't argue further. He just stayed perched on the ledge, occasionally barking insults at anyone who got too close to our bubble.
Outside, teams continued to battle for headbands, crashing into each other and shouting strategies. Every now and then, someone would notice our team sitting in the corner and try to approach, only to bounce off the barrier like a bird hitting a glass window.
"Hey!" Kaminari called from across the field. "Woods! You can't just camp out like that!"
"Why not?" I called back, smirking.
"Because it's lame!"
I shrugged. "Lame's working pretty well for us."
"HELL YEAH, IT IS!" Bakugou shouted from above. "YOU WANNA COME IN HERE AND SAY THAT, KAMINARI?! DIDN'T THINK SO!"
Eventually, the buzzer rang, signaling the end of the battle. Our team stood up—well, Bakugou stood; the rest of us lazily got to our feet—and the barrier disappeared with a snap of my fingers.
Aizawa's voice came over the speakers. "And that's the end of the cavalry battle. Teams with the highest scores, report to the center."
I stretched, yawning as we made our way toward the center. Midoriya's team glared daggers at us, especially since we'd stolen their winning points. Todoroki's team just looked annoyed.
"Nice teamwork, guys," I said, holding out a fist toward Kirishima and Sero.
Kirishima bumped it enthusiastically. "Anytime, dude! That was genius."
Bakugou jumped down from his ledge, smacking my hand away. "DON'T GET COCKY, WOODS! I'M THE REASON WE WON!"
"Sure, Blasty," I said, smirking. "Whatever you say."
I caught a glimpse of Dad in the observation booth, watching us with his usual blank expression. He didn't say anything, but I could tell he wasn't exactly thrilled with my strategy.
Still, we'd made it through the round, and that was all that mattered. Well, to me, anyway. Bakugou would probably explode if I reminded him again, so I kept that thought to myself.
