The training field was filled with simulated chaos. UA's standard obstacle course had been turned into a war zone of training robots, automated turrets, and shifting terrain. The objective? Work as a team to deactivate the "villain" core at the center while protecting each other from the relentless attacks.
Standing on the sidelines, I adjusted my gloves and glanced at the rest of the class. The instructions had been simple enough, but I could already tell this was going to be a nightmare. Everyone was shouting over each other, their strategies clashing like bumper cars.
"Alright, team!" I called out, my voice dripping with mock enthusiasm. "We've got this. Just follow my lead, stay out of my way, and maybe, just maybe, we won't die."
Kirishima laughed, clapping me on the back with enough force to rattle my ribs. "That's the spirit, Woods! Let's crush this!"
Todoroki, standing a few feet away, gave me one of his signature stoic glances. "You can't do everything yourself."
"Thanks, Dad," I shot back, earning a snicker from Kaminari.
Aizawa's voice crackled through the speakers, cutting off the banter. "Time starts now. Move it."

The course came alive with flashing lights and the rumble of shifting platforms. Our team spread out, each person taking on their assigned role. My job? Defend. With my Power Negation Field, I could shield the others from the worst of the robots' quirks while they advanced toward the core.
It worked for a while. Whenever a robot fired off a laser or launched a projectile, the attacks fizzled out harmlessly within my range. The others seemed impressed—until the shouting started.
"Woods!" Yaoyorozu called out, her tone frantic. "We need your cover over here!"
"Hang on, I've got Todoroki pinned down over here!" Kaminari yelled, lightning crackling from his palms.
"Move up, you idiots!" Bakugou barked, blasting himself forward with a roar of explosions.
It was chaos. Everyone was calling out orders, and no one was listening.
I groaned, rubbing my temples. "This is why I hate group projects," I muttered, jogging toward Yaoyorozu.
Before I could get there, a turret rotated toward her, firing off a rapid burst of projectiles. I expanded my field, neutralizing the attack, but the effort pulled my focus from my surroundings.
What I didn't account for was the fourth robot—a massive one that had apparently been programmed to adapt to quirks.
I sensed its movement a second too late. My attention had been on the smaller robots, and in that split second, the massive one slammed into me.
The impact sent me flying across the field, my back slamming into a fake wall. Pain exploded through me, and for the first time in years, I felt...vulnerable. My quirk had always been there, a subconscious barrier that protected me from everything. But now, my head was spinning, my ears ringing, and I was...confused. I staggered, staring in disbelief at the smoking remains of a training robot that had managed to land a hit. A hit. On me.
The entire class froze, their faces a mix of shock and horror. Even Aizawa leaned forward in his observation booth, his expression unreadable.
"Holy crap!" Kaminari blurted out. "Did that robot just hit Woods?!"
Kirishima gawked. "I didn't think anything could hit him!"
"Neither did I," I said flatly, still processing what had just happened. My hand hovered over the bruise forming on my ribs. "What is this? Pain? Betrayal?"
Todoroki's voice cut through the chaos. "You were distracted. You can't shield everything at once if you're not paying attention."
I shot him a glare. "Thanks for the analysis, Sherlock. Maybe if half the team wasn't screaming at me, I wouldn't have gotten ambushed."
"Or maybe," Todoroki said coolly, "you should stop trying to handle everything by yourself."
The words hit harder than I wanted to admit.

The exercise resumed, but I couldn't shake the sting of that hit—not just the physical pain, but the realization that my overconfidence had cost the team. By the time we reached the "villain" core, the atmosphere was tense. Everyone was second-guessing their actions, and I could feel their eyes on me, waiting to see if I'd mess up again.
When we finally deactivated the core and the exercise ended, I dropped onto the grass, exhausted and annoyed.
Aizawa's voice echoed across the field. "Not bad. But if you all can't figure out how to communicate, you'll get yourselves killed in a real fight."
I groaned, throwing an arm over my eyes. "Yeah, yeah, teamwork makes the dream work. Got it."
As the others started gathering their things, Todoroki walked over, his expression unreadable.
"You're good," he said after a moment, "but you're not invincible. Remember that."
I raised an eyebrow, sitting up to meet his gaze. "Is that supposed to be advice or a lecture?"
"Take it however you want." He turned and walked off, leaving me to stew in my own thoughts.
For the first time, I wasn't sure if I was annoyed or impressed. Maybe both.
