I was following Billie closely. She walked with a confident stride, radiating determination. At that moment, meeting her gaze would have probably traumatized me. The tension in the room was palpable, and I quickly understood why.
Skeet was at the center of attention again. Everyone had gathered around a couch, and the music had been turned down to almost nothing, leaving the tension to fill the space.
People instinctively moved aside to let Billie through. She turned and scanned the room until her eyes landed on me, reaching out a hand to invite me to join her. That gesture, so simple yet so thoughtful, threw me off for a second before I stepped up to her side.
"Dude, take that fucking word out of your mouth before I smash your face in!" Skeet yelled.
Of course, it was him shouting. Across from him stood Lary, the muscular guy who had hit on me earlier. He was stepping forward, his face tight and his fist already clenched.
"Your friends better get you out of my sight right now," Lary spat.
"Guys, come on, you're ruining my sister's party," Finneas intervened, stepping in like a mediator.
Billie gently let go of my hand, turning to Skeet with a mix of apparent calm and irritation.
"Care to explain what the hell is going on, Skeet?" she asked, firm but composed.
Skeet turned his head, surprised to see Billie, before his gaze slid to me. He pointed a finger at Lary.
"This asshole was talking shit about Dina."
Wait, what? What the hell does my name have to do with this mess?
Billie fixed her dark gaze on Lary.
"Talking shit about Dina?" she repeated, her eyebrows furrowing slightly.
Skeet pivoted back to Lary, glaring daggers at him.
"Go on, dude, say the crap you were saying. Say it now that she's right here."
A hand rested gently on my back. Instinctively, I turned and found Kate, looking just as confused as me.
"What's going on?" she asked.
I shrugged slightly, a nervous smile on my face.
"I have no idea," I murmured.
The exchange between Skeet and Lary was getting tenser and tenser. And then, Skeet spoke loudly, ensuring everyone in the room could hear.
"He said he was going to fuck that bitch tonight."
What?!
I spun around in an instant.
"What the fuck did you just say, asshole?!" I shouted, stepping forward, anger flaring up in me.
I took the lead, stepping in front of Billie to confront Lary. My gaze burned with a rage I didn't even know I was capable of. He stepped back, caught off guard, as I kept advancing.
"Say that again, I dare you," I demanded, my fists clenched.
He lowered his head, avoiding my eyes.
"I didn't exactly say that," he muttered weakly.
Skeet sighed loudly behind me, exasperated.
"Don't back out now, dude, I heard you clear as day."
I turned back to Lary, fuming. I was going to kill him.
"I'd rather fucking die than touch a piece of shit like you, even with a stick."
Lary, clearly insulted, stepped closer to me, his face twisted in anger.
"Don't start acting all tough... you bitch," he spat.
I didn't even have time to react. A firm yet gentle hand pulled me back. It was Billie. She stepped between us.
"Get the fuck out of my house right now before I break your fucking face," she ordered, her tone icy.
Finneas jumped in immediately, shoving Lary toward the door.
"Get out. Now," he said sharply.
Lary punched the couch in frustration before grabbing his jacket. He sneered, full of disdain.
"Lame-ass party."
Without a glance back, he stormed out of the room, followed by his friend, the one who had tried hitting on Kate earlier. The tension in the room finally started to ease. I found myself face to face with Billie, her worried eyes on me.
"You okay?" she asked softly.
I nodded, even though my heart was still pounding. I instinctively turned to Skeet.
"Thanks for sticking up for me," I said.
Even though I don't always get along with him, not many guys would have done what he did tonight.
Skeet gave me a sincere smile.
"It's no big deal, don't worry about it," he said, before suddenly gagging. He grimaced slightly and turned to Finneas.
"Finn, I think I'm about to throw up," he added.
He got up quickly, and Billie gave him a pat on the back.
"You should have puked on that asshole," she joked.
Skeet laughed before running to the sink, clearly ready to vomit all the alcohol he had downed.
I caught Billie's gaze, and suddenly the memories of earlier came rushing back. Her hands on my hips, her breath so close... Something was definitely going to happen in that room, but all of it had been cut short by this mess.
Billie smiled slightly.
"Well, I guess my party is officially over."
I looked away for a moment, noticing how everyone seemed to be getting ready to leave. Some were grabbing their jackets, others were helping clean up. Yeah, the party was definitely over.
A light touch on my arm brought me back to reality. I met Billie's eyes again.
"Did you still have a good time?" she asked gently.
I glanced at her fingers brushing against my arm. My heart raced. I knew my cheeks must be burning. I smiled, but my eyes lingered a second too long on her lips.
She was driving me completely crazy, and I was pretty sure she knew it.
me, who had always thought I was straight...
"If I hadn't been called a bitch, I'd give it a solid 6 out of 10."
Billie pretended to be offended.
"Wow, I'm only worth a 6?"
"It's a good start," I replied, laughing.
"Ouch, that's harsh, dude."
My gaze was drawn to Kate in the background, standing alone and looking a little lost, leaning against the counter. I couldn't leave her like that.
"I've got to take Kate home," I said, stepping away gently.
"We'll do this again soon?" she asked.
I nodded with a smile.
"I'm hoping for a 10 out of 10 next time," she said with a sparkle in her eyes I couldn't describe.
"You think you can pull that off?"
"Babe, I'm already working on it." she replied with a wink.
I gave her one last smile before heading to Kate.
"Ready to go?" I asked her.
"I've been waiting for you," she said with a smile.
I wasn't going to forget this night anytime soon....
