i was sinking into the depths, the water pulling me down, suffocating me. i tried to scream, but my head was underwater. my arms flailed, desperately reaching for the surface. but it was useless. i was frozen in place, parallel to the water that seemed so close.
in front of me, a white door slowly opened onto the surface. i struggled to open my eyes, hoping to see him... hoping he would reach out his hand, just one more time, to save me. but nothing.
i screamed in vain as the depths swallowed me whole.
then suddenly, a pressure on my arm.
someone was pulling me out of it.
"hey, dina, calm down."
i jolted awake. my eyes immediately locked onto billie's blue ones as she leaned over me. she looked almost as panicked as i was.
i slowly sat up, realizing my head had been resting against her shoulder. her hand traced soothing circles on mine, helping me regain my senses.
"fuck..." i muttered naturally.
billie gave me a small, timid smile.
"shit, you had a nightmare?"
"looks like it."
her hand left mine, slowly moving up to my cheek. her thumb brushed my skin.
"didn't seem like a fun one."
i frowned slightly before running a hand over my face.
i had been crying without even realizing it.
i gently took billie's hand, which was still there, and lowered it without letting go.
"you sure you're okay? you wanna talk about it?"
"nah, don't worry. it didn't make any sense."
"seemed like it made a lot of sense."
i answered with a smile, saying nothing more.
a light silence settled between us.
we were still on the couch. after dinner, we had put on Drive, and i must have fallen asleep within minutes.
billie eventually broke the silence.
"well i should probably go... it's late."
she started to get up, but i grabbed her arm.
"would you stay? kate isn't coming home, and... i don't feel like being alone."
she turned back to me, her gaze searching mine.
then she gently took the hand i had placed on her arm and helped me up.
"come on."
a sincere smile spread across my face as i led her to my room.
i sat gently on my bed while billie took in the decor of my room. her fingers skimmed over the record player, stopping on the blue cover of her own album resting there. she turned to me with a smile.
that smile.
it made me blush against my will. i felt weirdly embarrassed that she had noticed it.
i quickly got up to grab some pajamas from my closet before handing them to her.
she took them.
"mind if i take a quick shower?"
"yeah, go ahead."
this closeness was unsettling. it was the first time we were really alone, without anyone else around.
as the water started running in the bathroom, i changed quickly before slipping under my covers.
