The Miracle of Birth

I am lying on my bed in my bedroom, the blancket has been removed. Jenna, Bonnie, Dr Meredith Fell and Caroline are in the room. Ric and Jeremy preferred to wait downstairs. It seems a bit old-fashioned, having the men wait downstairs while the women take care of the birth. Then again, my baby was conceived in about 990 BC.

The contractions are coming about every 10 minutes right now. It hurts. But apart from the contractions, there really isn't anything to do but wait right now. And since everyone else isn't having contractions, they are talki g or playing on their phones to pass the time. As I lay here, all I wish is for Elijah to be here. All I can think is, he won't be here to greet his child after the birth.

Caroline interrupts my thoughts. "I just got off the phone with Freya, since Klaus isn't answering his phone. I told her that you're in labor. She says she wants to come over."

"Please let her wait downstairs with Ric and Jer. I may like her so far, but I'm not ready for her to see a baby come out of me." I deadpan, slightly out of breath. All the instructed breathing, pains and stress are really taking a toll on me.

Dr Fell - she asked me to call her Meredith, but somehow, I end up referring to her by her title anyway - squeezes my hand. "It won't be much longer now, Elena. The baby will be here soon."

'Soon' turns out to be not soon enough! As time goes by and the contractions come with shorter and shorter pauses, I grow more and more worried. What if something goes wrong? As a med student and former midwife, I know about a lot of things that can go wrong during birth. A lot of danger for both the mother and the baby. Like, for instance, what if the baby can't come and I need a C-section? Because we definitely do not have good enough medical equipment in the house for one of those!

My line of thoughts gets interrupted by Dr Fell's voice. "Okay, this is it. We're almost at 10 centimetres. Get ready to push, Elena, any minute now."

"Aah!" I growl out on pain as I squash Caroline's hand with mine as a strong contraction hits me. I can't believe how long this is taking. I take a couple of moments to catch my breath, mentally getting ready to push, when a commotion downstairs draws our attention away from me and my child.

Dr Fell furrows her eyebrows in worry. "What is that? We can't have any distractions right now!"

"I don't kn- wait! I hear Klaus!" Caroline says, alert now.

The commotion comes closer while she talks. Voices echo through the house, then a thumoing sound of footsteps, and merely seconds later, the door of my bedroom is violently pulled open. I gasp and my eyes widen.

Elijah stands in the doorstep.

Elijah!

My Elijah!

If I can still call him mine, I think sadly. But that's the only thought I have time for, before he rushes forward. In the next second, he is kneeling beside the bed and takes my hand.
