"the most support? Is headquarters in such dire straits?" Akame furrowed her brow, directing a serious question to Najenda.
"Worse than you can imagine," Chelsea interjected, a smile plastered on her face that held no trace of genuine mirth.
"Honest's imprisonment and Prime Minister Mellie's rise to power have dealt a devastating blow to the Revolutionary Army."
"Although Honest committed countless atrocities during his tenure, people still subconsciously held onto hope for the Empire."
"They hoped the Emperor would eventually recognize the minister's true nature and have him executed."
"As long as that hope remained, the people still had faith in the Empire. After all, the Empire had ruled them for a thousand years."
"A thousand years is long enough to not only control the populace but also their very thoughts."
"Therefore, in the mere months since Mellie's appointment, many regions that were on the verge of rebellion have fallen silent once more."
"Not to mention, Prime Minister Mellie has been quite effective in her role."
"The Revolutionary Army is steadily losing ground."
Bulat nodded in agreement with Chelsea's assessment. As a soldier, he understood the common people's lingering hope in the Empire.
He had heard it firsthand from the rank-and-file soldiers.
Rebellion was a last resort, only undertaken when people were truly desperate, pushed to the brink of starvation.
Prime Minister Honest had driven the populace to that point.
But the new minister had swiftly reversed that trend in a remarkably short time.
This naturally posed a significant challenge to the Revolutionary Army, already vastly outnumbered and outmatched by the Empire.
"Furthermore, the replacement of the regional governors has also severely impacted the Revolutionary Army," Chelsea continued.
"Many local governors and officials were appointed by Prime Minister Honest after he purged his rivals. These individuals naturally harbored resentment towards him."
"Therefore, the Revolutionary Army had secretly established contact with them. They not only provided us with resources and supplies but also promised to surrender their cities when the revolution gained momentum."
"But now, we've lost all of that!"
Lubbock, bewildered, asked, "Did the governors and officials, or even our own people, have no warning?"
"None whatsoever. It happened in the blink of an eye, as if they knew about our connections with the governors and officials. They were completely prepared."
"Before any of us could react, the governors and officials were apprehended, and their replacements swiftly consolidated control over their respective regions."
"We suffered heavy losses in the ensuing chaos."
A heavy silence fell over the group as they absorbed Chelsea's grim report.
"It seems we underestimated Prime Minister Mellie. She's single-handedly revitalized an empire that was on the brink of collapse," Lubbock remarked with a sigh.
"Indeed, that is the consensus within the Revolutionary Army now," Najenda confirmed.
"So, what are our next steps? Thanks to Prime Minister Mellie, we assassins have become practically redundant," Mine asked, voicing the question on everyone's mind.
