The car ride to the party was a blast! Annie and I had the windows rolled down. Music was blasting as we sang along like we were holding our own concert. It felt surreal.
"I like me better when I'm with youuuuu," we yelled at the top of our lungs, completely out of tune but still loving every second of the time. Annie's laugh filled the car. Her laugh was light and contagious, it was the kind I couldn't help but join in.
When the song changed to Everything Has Changed, she didn't miss a beat, picking up the lyrics immediately. Girl obsession with Taylor Swift.
"Everything has changed... all I know is a single name, andddd—"
I jumped in, our voices clashing hilariously as we played out the chorus.
By the time we pulled up to the party, my face hurt from smiling so much. But the moment I turned off the car, I heard a loud growl.
"Uh, that wasn't the car, was it?" I teased Annie, looking at her with a raised brow.
She groaned, hiding her face behind her hands. "Stop it!"
I laughed. "Hey, come on. Let's feed the beast before it gets angry."
She peeked at me, her lips twitching into a smile. "Fine, but I'm serious—bring me pasta. White sauce," she said, pointing a finger at me like it was a royal command.
"Yes, ma'am, I am at your service," I replied, bowing down dramatically before heading toward the buffet.
When I returned, I set her plate down with a flourish. "Your royal pasta awaits, madam."
"Finally!" she exclaimed, digging in with depair. After a few bites, she paused, her eyes lighting up. "Damn, this is so good."
"Told ya," I said while taking a bite of my own.
She chewed thoughtfully, then gestured toward the drinks table. "Juice?" she asked, giggling at herself for talking with her mouth full.
"First finish your food, will you?" I replied, shaking my head but smiling. I passed her one of the drinks from the waiter's plate.
Everything felt so easy, so right.. but little did I know this was the silence before the storm.
"Well, if it isn't the loser Matty," a voice sneered behind me. My stomach dropped. I didn't even need to turn around to know who it was.
