Sebby and Hugo had the grandest plan—or so they claimed. The moment they snuck into my room that morning, I knew it was going to be one of those chaotic adventures. Sebby stood by the window, her usual mischievous grin plastered on her face, while Hugo leaned against the doorframe, arms crossed, trying to look serious but failing miserably.
"Okay, Annie, here's the plan," Sebby began, her voice hushed like we were part of some high-stakes mission. "We're going to sneak you out of your house. Easy peasy."
"Yeah, sure," I replied dryly, glancing at the locked door of my room. "My parents are literally in the next room. You think I'll just climb out the window and they won't notice?"
Hugo raised an eyebrow at Sebby. "Told you it's a bummer plan."
"Fine," Sebby huffed. "Plan B then. Get up, we've got a mission!"
I peeked out, my hair an absolute mess. "Mission? Do you guys know what time it is?"
Hugo smirked. "Time to be awesome. Get dressed, we're busting you out of here."
"Are you insane?" I whisper-yelled. "If my parents find out—"
Sebby interrupted, his voice dripping with fake exasperation. "No 'ifs,' Annie. We've got a plan. Trust us."
I sighed. "This better not end with me grounded for life."
Five minutes later, I was in my hoodie and sneakers, meeting them at the door.
"Okay, so what's the brilliant plan?" I asked skeptically.
Sebby grinned. "Simple. We tell your parents it's a school volunteer campaign. Hugo backs me up. We're irresistible."
I rolled my eyes. "Irresistible? Yeah, sure. And what if they ask for proof?"
"They won't," Hugo said, patting my shoulder. "Your parents love you too much to say no."
"Love me enough to say no to literally everything," I muttered under my breath.
When Sebby rang the doorbell, my heart nearly stopped. They had gotten out of my house after the planning. My mom answered, looking confused.
"Sebby? Hugo? What's going on?"
Sebby turned on the charm. "Good morning, Mrs. Clarke. We're here to pick up Annie for a school volunteer campaign. Last-minute thing, but really important—helping sort supplies for underprivileged schools."
