The fire crackled, casting a warm glow on everyone's faces. Laughter filled the air as Sebby and Hugo recounted their epic fail at biking earlier that day. I would've been enjoying myself too only if Melissa's sharp glare was not drilling into me like a laser beam... I'm sure she can kill me today.
"I was gonna eat that!" she practically yelled, her voice rising above the laughter.
"Geez, lady, calm down. It's just a marshmallow," I said, waving her off like it was no big deal.
Her glare intensified. "Just a marshmallow? Just a marshmallow?! Alex, that was the last one, and I was about to eat it!"
"Relax, it's not like I ate your inheritance or something." I tried to keep it light, but the dramatic gasp that followed told me I had only made things worse.
Melissa grabbed a fistful of my hair and pulled. "I want marshmallows, Alex!"
"Ow, okay, okay, Mel!" I yelped, trying to pry her hand off.
"No! It's Melissa! And you're not off the hook until you bring me marshmallows," she declared, crossing her arms like a queen making a royal decree.
"You look cute when you're mad, you know," I said, flashing my signature smirk.
"Oh, I'm about to get adorable," she shot back, her sarcasm cutting through the air like a knife.
Annie burst out laughing, nearly spilling her drink. "You two are so entertaining. This is better than Netflix.. these trips are fun guys"
Hugo chimed in, "I mean, Alex, you had it coming. How dare you eat the last marshmallow?"
Even Matthew joined the teasing. "Big mistake, bro. You might not survive the night."
"Fine, fine! I'm going," I grumbled, getting to my feet. "Don't start planning my funeral just yet."
Ishi smirked. "Oh, we'll wait until Mel decides whether it's going to be a proper burial or cremation."
Melissa shot me a look as if to say, You'd better run, and I didn't need to be told twice.

After what felt like an hour, I finally found the cottage shop at the edge of the campsite, its windows glowing warmly in the dark. As I stepped inside, the cozy interior wrapped around me like a hug.
