Alex and I loved hanging out on the school rooftop during their breaks. It was our meeting point. The ground below us looked like a sea of hustling students. But up here, it was just the two of us. This day was nothing different, we were having our lunch and talking.
"Do you ever wonder what everyone else is thinking down there?" I asked as I had to start a conversation, and this was the first question that came to my mind.
"Are they having exciting lives, or are they just as bored as I am here?" Alex asked teasingly, shaking his head.
"I doubt they're as bored as we are. This place can be a real snoozefest sometimes,"
"I am not boring you morooonnnn. Bur can't argue with that, I mean when has school ever been interesting?" I announced, popping open the soda can I had brought with me.
I usually ate less for lunch, I preferred having some soft-drink or maybe chocolate.
"But hey, at least we're making memories, right? School life will be over before we know it, and we'll miss those 'good old days.'" Alex's eyes crinkled as he smiled, reaching for a chocolate bar he had stashed in his bag.
"I guess that's the silver lining in all this, huh? Making the most of it with my best friend." I spoke.
But I guess he was right, these good days will soon become old, will we still be this close? will we always be together like we are right now? Or would things be different then?
We sat side by side, sharing their snacks as we watched the world go by below them. It was moments like these that I cherished—simple, unadorned moments where their friendship shone through. I didn't need extravagant adventures or wild parties to have a good time.
Being together, whether in silence or deep in conversation, was enough.
*FLASHBACK*
Best friends since their early teenage years, Alex and Annie had experienced the throes of adolescence together. They had navigated the rollercoaster of emotions, triumphs, and heartbreaks, always with the other by their side for support.
Their bond was unbreakable, rooted in trust and mutual understanding. They finished each other's sentences and knew each other's quirks inside out.
