Chapter 27

Reader's POV

I cracked my eyes open, the sunset peeking through my bedroom window. I rubbed the tiredness from my eyes and looked around my room once again.

How did I get here?

Last, I remember, I was at school and I found out that Aaron asked Aphmau to go to Prom with him. So... How did I get here?

My head began to ache from thinking too much. I held my hand up to my forehead and rubbed at my temples to soothe my headache.

Once my headache subsided, I slid out of bed and took a look at myself in the mirror. I still had my school uniform on. I sighed in relief and fixed my bedhead enough to at least not be judged by my mom.

I walked down the stairs and into the kitchen where my mother was preparing food. "Hi, Mom." I greeted, suppressing a yawn and slouching into a chair at the dining table.

"Hi, Mija!" My mother greeted me with a smile as she continued chopping away at the food on the cutting board.

Cutting straight to the point, I asked my mom the question that's been confusing me for the past five minutes. "Mom, how did I get here?" I asked staring as she started sautéing cut-up veggies.

"Mija, we've already been over that. I've given you the talk before." She brushed off.

"Huh?" My brow raised as I cringed at what my mom was implying. "Ew! No! That's not what I meant."

Mom looked back at me briefly. Her smile grew as she laughed softly. "Come on, Mija. It was a joke, laugh a little, won't you?"

"It wasn't funny, Mom!" I sighed, melting into my chair further.

"It was a little funny..."

"You know what I meant. How did I get home after school?" I asked again, this time making sure my question wasn't mistaken for anything else.

After finishing seasoning the veggies, she turned back and replied. "Well, a nice boy dropped you off."

Confusion sprang at me once more. "A boy? What boy? You aren't mad a boy dropped me off?"

Mom shook her head. "Not this boy, he was well-mannered. Unlike your friend, Aaron."

I nodded my head unsteadily. "Uh, yeah... Aaron, my friend..."

"I've invited him over for dinner, as a thanks for bringing you home! Maybe, you'll even end up with a boyfriend by the time he leaves!" She teases.

My eyes widened; my posture straightened. "Dinner?! BOYFRIEND?!?! I-I thought you didn't like the idea of me dating???"

Mom shrugged, turning back around to pay attention to the veggies. "No, but with this boy, I wouldn't mind if you dated him."

"WHAT!?!" I shouted. I couldn't believe a word she was saying. What happened to my overprotective mom????

"He's coming in thirty minutes. So, if I were you, I'd get dressed in something less wrinkled."

"Mom. Are you serious???" I asked. I couldn't tell if she was joking.

"Yes. Now, hurry! You take so long to get ready." My mom shooed me away and returned her focus on the food.

I sighed, accepting a random guy would enter my home and eat my precious food. I walked up the stairs in defeat.

"Fix your hair too! It looks like a rat's nest!" Mom called up the stairs.
