A FEW MONTHS AFTER THE EVENTS OF CHAPTER 58...

A lump in her throat formed as she staggered to stand, her heavy belly slowing the pacing in her steps across her cabin as she awaited the return of Shikamaru that day. She stared at the clock intently watching as the arms of the clock moved every second. A shiver went through her spine, as the cold air seeped into her cabin, and there wasn't much she could do about it, other than lay upon the fireplace that had been provided to her within her lodging. It was October 7th. A night shy of the first day of deployment and it was a scary feeling to [Name]. Everyone she cared for and loved would all be fighting against her brother in a day's time. It caused a rift in her emotions, as her heart twisted and turned at all the outlining outcomes that would proceed throughout the next days, weeks, months...years?

She halted as she heard the wooden planks of her balcony creak underneath whoever approached, assumingly, Shikamaru. The wooden planks creaked beneath careful steps, a sound that pulled her from her thoughts. She stood frozen for a moment, her hand instinctively resting on her belly, as the faint shadow of a figure came into view on the balcony. The latch clicked softly, and the door slid open to reveal Shikamaru.

"Sorry I'm late," he said, stepping inside, holding up a paper bag from Yahinku Q. "Lines were longer than I thought. Guess everyone wanted one last decent meal before everything goes to hell..." She didn't respond right away, instead watching him as he set the bag down on the table. "I thought you'd fallen asleep on the way or something," she teased lightly, her voice carrying a faint edge of relief.

He smirked, the corners of his mouth lifting in that lazy way she had come to expect. "If only. Too much going on in my head for that. Too..troublesome.." As he unpacked the food, the savory aroma of grilled meat and spices filled the room, briefly cutting through the ever-present chill. She moved to sit by the table, lowering herself slowly, her movements deliberate. Her gaze flickered between the food and the clock on the wall, though her thoughts remained far from the present.

For a moment, the silence stretched between them, the only sound was the crinkling of paper and the crackle of the fire. It wasn't the sort of silence that begged to be filled, but one that carried the weight of everything neither dared to say outright.
