Would things be different if she had confessed earlier? Would he still be alive if they had both stepped down? Was this truly her fault?
Oralie sat on the sand, watching the waves of clear midnight blue water kiss the jagged rocks and tease the sand. The pink in the sky had faded into inky dark blue dotted with milky white stars. So many that it reminded her of the tiny freckles on Kenric's cheeks. The moon was a curved crescent, it reminded her of his dimpled smile. She closed her eyes, remembering the soft brush of his fingers against her cheek as a gentle breeze tickles her skin. Her azure eyes opened again as she watched the water ripple, another reminder of his green-flecked blue eyes. She exhaled softly, missing his warmth as the wind made her shiver.
This beautiful place had been their secret spot, a place they could slip into to escape reality. Here, they weren't councillors. They weren't two star-crossed lovers with no way to be together. They were just Kenric and Oralie, two elves who had feelings for one another.
And oh what she wouldn't do to be held in his arms again.
Kenric had asked several times for them both to step down from the Council to live their life together. Oralie's heart ached to accept but her brain knew she had too much on her shoulders to leave it all. She had a daughter, illegally. And if she wanted to keep her daughter safe she needed to keep this position. She needed the power to help the Black Swan but oh how she wished change didn't need that big of a sacrifice. Because staying meant giving him up. Giving a life together with him up.
Until today, she wonders if she made the right choice.
If she had stepped down, he would still be alive. She could've found a different way to protect her daughter, perhaps Kenric would've helped too.
When she didn't, the Black Swan still had a supporter in the Council. Sophie still has a supporter, two–for as long as Kenric lived.
However, by not leaving Kenric had lost his life.
We went ten steps back against the Neverseen. Because Kenric knew valuable information, things he didn't share for the protection of her and the others. The guilt tears at her until now. The longing for him amplifies every minute without him. In some way, humans were lucky.
They didn't have to worry about living without their loved one for long because in the coming years they would join them naturally. They just needed to cope with the ache for that time frame but elves? Oralie would have to live for millenia to come with the gut-wrenching guilt of not being able to save Kenric and the longing to be with him again.
Because thats what love was, pure bliss when you're together and torture when you're not. Both a curse and a blessing at once. She had been selfish, wanting both her daughter and her love when she was cursed to only have one, or perhaps neither. She looked up, admiring the beautiful stars that dot the inky blue sky. They were stars, her and Kenric, so warm and so close but so out of reach. Burn bright and beautiful but collapses at one point. She supposed they had collapsed.
Their love was bittersweet, a story she wished didn't have to end. For others, their star-crossed love was simply something on the side but for her? It was her reason to push forward. The dream of being able to finally be with Kenric, to raise not just Sophie but perhaps another child with him without the threat of the Neverseen looming over them and the cracks of the world crumbling down on them. For years, it was what she worked for until he was gone. Taken from her so cruelly. She could remember standing outside on the grass patch, fear consuming her as she watched Oblivimyre burnt down, liquid amethyst dripping down and no red hair in sight. Sobs had torn through her, fear and fury crashing inside her heart as she begged and pleaded to who she wasn't sure that Kenric would appear any minute now, that he'd come out with his dimpled smile and sweep her into his arms and murmur everything was all right into her hair.
But he didn't.
And the moment she found out, was the exact moment her life–and heart, crumbled into pieces.
Seeing her daughter safe soothed her the tiny remnant of her shattered heart but the loss of her love was too overwhelming for her to cling to any sort of victories–no matter big or small. She could still feel the way her throat itched as she inhaled the disgusting smoke and the salty tears running down her cheeks as someone held her. The edges of her clothes were singed and she was pretty sure she needed medical help because her throat was closing up but she couldn't distract herself from the fact that Kenric was gone.
Forever.
He wasn't coming back, he'd left her despite promising numerous times he wouldn't. But she supposed staying in her heart counted, she was too upset to care about technicalities. Years with him and now he was ripped out of her reach. She dusted the sand of her hands, her eyes distant and her heart heavy.
How did it all change so fast? Every time she stepped into this place with him she left with a happiness and a light heart but now? Now she left with her heart heavier than ever.
She sighed standing up and dusting the sand off her satin green dress, a tribute to him. She lifted her head to watch the gentle waves of water one last time before lifting her pathfinder up to the soft glow of moonlight to create a path. With a heavy heart, she let the light whisk her away back into her castle.
Perhaps we were both doomed from the start, every life proving to be against us. Perhaps she'd never know how a life with Kenric would look, perhaps she'll never get to feel the joy of holding a red-headed child in her arms staring up at her with azure blue eyes and call her "Mom". Or perhaps he blames her for his death, wishing he had stepped down without her anyway so his life wouldn't have been snatched. No matter that, he'll always remain the first and last man to have claimed her heart.
He'll always be her favourite what if. Always something, never nothing. Always almost.
In the end, it's just another story.
An unrequited love.
Same type, different couple. Hope you guys loved it as much as I did writing it 🫶
Until next time!!
