KASHI

"Mummy," I called out loudly as I walked downstairs. I thought he would have left by now, but he was still here. My eyes landed on Papa and him engrossed in conversation, while Reyaan lay peacefully in his arms, his small face resting against Mr. Agnihotri's shoulder.

"What happened?" Mummy asked, her voice soft yet curious, as I approached her quietly.

"Come with me to the kitchen," I whispered, tugging at her arm gently.

"Kashi beta, you should ask them to stay. It's already so late," Papa interrupted, his tone laced with concern.

I hesitated for a moment before looking at my husband. "Mr. Agnihotri, if you can, you should stay back," I said, keeping my voice steady. His gaze flickered toward me briefly—just long enough to maintain appearances in front of my parents—but he didn't respond directly.

"I have work, Mr. Rao. And Reyaan can't sleep without me. We need to leave," he replied, his calm but firm tone making my chest tighten as I looked down to hide my disappointment.

"Mummy, come to the kitchen, na," I urged again, pulling at her arm. She glanced at me, silently signaling with her eyes to stop pushing. Frustrated, I stood beside her impatiently, biting my tongue.

When Mr. Agnihotri finally stood to leave, we all walked them to the car. I moved closer to him as we reached the vehicle, signaling with a small gesture that I wanted to hold Reyaan for a moment. He hesitated but handed him to me, likely aware that denying me in front of my parents wasn't an option.

As soon as I took my son into my arms, I closed my eyes and held him tightly, savoring the moment. I placed a gentle kiss on his soft cheek and cradled him close.

"Mumma loves you so much, baby," I murmured, kissing his forest. His forest-green eyes locked with mine, and a small smile crept onto my lips as he leaned forward to plant a sloppy kiss on my chin. My heart ached in the best way.

"Come back soon, okay?" I whispered against his forehead, pressing a final kiss there as tears threatened to spill from my eyes.

Reluctantly, I handed Reyaan back to his father. Reyaan smiled sweetly, oblivious to the ache in my chest, as Mr. Agnihotri carefully secured him in the baby seat.

I stood between Mummy and Papa, watching as the car pulled out of the driveway. Papa wrapped an arm around my shoulders, and I leaned into him, resting my head against his shoulder while waving goodbye. Reyaan's small fist bumped against the car window, his face scrunched in a glare as he looked back at us. This little man is such a jealous kind.

As the car disappeared into the distance, I turned to Mummy. "Mummy, come with me to the kitchen," I said.

We walked inside, but before I could rush ahead, Mummy caught my wrist, halting me at the doorstep.
