Veronica - March, 2007

Ring. Ring.

"Joe, are you going to get that?" I looked over at the Jonas Brother wrestling his younger brother, Nick.

"Yeah, toss me my phone, Ron!" He responded to me with laughter taking over his voice as Nick tried pushing him off.

I toss him his phone and he, surprisingly, catches it as he got off of his brother, giving me that stupid "champion" look of his. He was caught off guard when he saw his phone and gestured me over.

"Who is it?" I asked as I looked at his phone. Unknown Caller.

He shrugged and picked it up.

"Yes, this is Joe, may I ask-"

And automatically I knew it was not a prank call.

"What do you mean-? Urgent? Where are they-? Yes, I am with the sister, we will be there as soon as possible." He hung up abruptly and looked at me with pain in his eyes. "We need to go, now." He grabbed his jacket off the coat hanger and grabbed his car keys without stopping to look at us.

Nick and I quickly followed him, bombarding him with questions as to what was wrong, but he wouldn't even budge. He threw open the front door and rushed to his car, Nick and I trying to keep up with his pace. He started the car before we even got in, and drove as quickly as he could out of his driveway as soon as we hopped into the back seat.

"Joe, you're freaking me out, can you tell me what's happening? What happened to my sister?" I asked, ready to give up. I knew whatever it was, it wasn't good.

He didn't even look back. He sped through the streets, even rushing through a few red lights.

"Joseph! Answer me!"

"Your family was in an accident, Ronnie."

There it was. I felt my heart stop. My eyes widened. Nick looked over at me and grabbed my hand. My breath felt heavy. I looked up at the rearview mirror and saw the pain in Joe's eyes.

"Nick, can you call Kevin and tell him to tell mom and dad? They need to know." Joe said. I watched him ask Nick this question, as if he were struggling to say anything at all. And why shouldn't he? His girlfriend was just in an accident.

We quickly drove into a parking spot in the hospital and pretty much ran to the hospital's front desk.

"Jason. We're here for Jason," Nick said to the nurse behind the counter. She gave us directions to where we were supposed to sit while my family were all being cared for in the ER.

We got there and sat in silence. All the thoughts went running through my head.

My third birthday with my parents and sister. The first time we met the Jonases. When I first noticed Joe had a crush on my older sister, and I convinced her to go after him. The first Jonas Brothers concert my sister and I went to. The first time my sister drove me by herself. The family vacation the four of us had taken last year to Miami.

I started crying.

Nick grabbed my hand and I began to sob into his shoulder.

"I need to get some air," Joe said as he watched me. He got up and walked out of the room.

"He doesn't want to cry," Nick whispered into my ear. I looked up at him and he sighed. "Joe loves your sister more than anything, he can't imagine anything happening to her." I knew he was right. Aubrey and Joe. They were beyond perfect for each other. Joe's been in love with her since the day he met her.

Nick squeezed my hand as he noticed the doctor walk in, red-eyed Joe following. I looked up and took in a deep breath. Joe took his seat back next to me, and I quickly grabbed his hand.

"Veronica, correct? I'm Dr. Conners," The doctor asked, looking up from his clipboard.

As if on cue, Kevin and his parents rushed through the door.

"We're so sorry we got here so late, any news?" Denise Jonas asked.

"I was just about to inform Miss Jason about everything. Sit, please." The Jonases took their seats and the doctor began once again. "My dear, I'm afraid that your parents aren't looking very good. They flew out of the car as soon as they hit the highway median."

"And Aubrey?" I asked, holding back as many tears as I could.

"She's fine. The car flipped, but she will be okay. She is just recovering. I'm afraid that she has hit her head pretty hard, though."

"What does that mean?"

"We don't know yet. She may be a little slow, she may have lost some senses. It's hard to tell right now. Would you like to see her?"

Immediately Joe and I got up.

"I'm sorry, sir, immediate family only."

"But I-"

"Joe, I'll tell her you're out here."

Joe nodded and I could see the pain in his eyes as he sat down. The doctor walked me out and through the double doors of the ER recovery rooms. He led me into the room where I saw my sister sleeping, tears beginning to form in my eyes.

"Where are my parents?"

Dr. Conners sighed. "They are still in surgery. We are trying everything we can, Miss Jason."

I nodded and he left me alone with my sister. I grabbed a chair and dragged it next to her bed, taking a seat. I looked at her, all cut up and bruised, and began to sob.

"Ronnie?" I heard a soft voice say.

"Aubrey! Oh thank God!" I hugged her and she whimpered under my squeeze. I pulled back immediately. "How are you feeling?"

"What the hell happened? I feel absolutely terrible."

"You were in an accident and-"

"Where are mom and dad?"

"They, uh, they were with you... They are still in, um, in surgery." I looked at my shocked sister. "Joe's outside, waiting for you."

"Who?"

I immediately stood up and stopped talking.

"Joe? Your best friend? Your boy-"

"Doesn't ring a bell. Ron, can you grab me some water, please? My throat is killing me."

My heart began to pound. I nodded and walked into the hallway to find a doctor. As soon as I did, my thoughts began racing. Why doesn't she know who Joe is? Does she not remember any of them? Is this what happened because she hit her head?

I began pacing the hallway. Then it hit me.

What the hell am I going to tell Joe?
