The scorching sun rose high on the long city pavement, scorching the ground around it. The only sound for miles was the occasional cricket and the shriveled moans from a dried up zombie. Two figures march across the desolate landscape, heat bearing down on them, yet towards an unknown destination they walk onwards.
Under the shady protection of an abandoned gas station the two men take shelter from the heat and to re-hydrate. One removing his hood revealing a mess of dark mint curls.. Dust and sweat plastering some of his hair to his face. The other male had dark brown hair with yellow tips. He wore a pair of engineering goggles over his eyes. The minty haired man poured water over his face to help cool him off before opening a can of beans.
"Oi November, how much farther?" He inquired of his goggle wearing companion while shoveling a bite of beans into his mouth.
"Just a few miles... be faster if we had a car, but not many vehicles still work in the apocalypse, so walking it is." November replied.
"Uhg... why are we even doing this?" The other male complained, eating more of the beans.
"Because if there's so much as a hint as to what started this apocalypse hidden down there, then it could finally start the path to a cure." November said firmly, like he was dead set on his goal.
"And how do you even know that this one lab owned by this one guy is the right one to be searching?" He asked skeptically.
"Because Leon, this was the last clue my brother gave me before I lost him... it's all I have to go off of." November said, trying not to think back on that dark day.
"You sure that he was right? Also you never told me what happened... I found you trapped under rubble surrounded by brain munchers." Leon said, inquiring further into the clearly rocky subject.
"Uhg... fine. I hate your persistence by the way." November said with a heavy sigh. Leon shrugged with a smug smirk on his face, putting aside the now empty bean can.
It all started a few months after the apocalypse began, back when the world was just beginning to fall apart. When the Military made desperate and feeble attempts to eradicate the hordes and protect the living. I was at one such camp with my siblings... My older brother did his best to keep us safe, often going out with the military groups to scout out better locations and off as many walking dead as possible. My younger sister tried to keep our spirits up, drawing, talking about the past, just doing anything to put a smile on our faces. But our fragile sense of security didn't last long.
It started with the loud gun fire, people shouting and cursing. The commotion woke many of us up, curious and fearful eyes peeping from their tents. People running everywhere grabbing guns. My older brother tried to pull me and my younger sister back inside the tent, but the booming sound of an explosion made everyone freeze dead in their tracks. Someone or something had just blown a hole straight through our defenses, allowing a massive hoard of starving, brain dead freaks to lumber into the camp.
There were more screams, people tried to flee but the entire camp was surrounded. The military couldn't keep them back and decided to abandon the camp, evacuating as many soldiers as they could. They only started to evacuate civilians after a majority of their own people had evacuated. By the time me and my siblings made it to the transport helicopter there was only one spot left. My older brother got my sister on, we promised we'd find her later, we told her to survive no matter what. As we watched our dear little sister be taken away on the helicopter another explosion went off. More and more of the undead filtered in, taking over the once safe camp. My older brother was able to carve a path out for us, we ran towards the city, hoping to find a spot to wait out the horde. If only we had known going there would be our last big mistake.
In the city there were more undead than I had ever seen in my life. My older brother started shooting as many as he could while I tried to find us somewhere safe to hide. I spotted a mostly intact building, and it seemed like there were no undead in there. I turned around, calling to my older brother. When I did, an explosion went off, it was right near where I was. I got sent flying, a bunch of debris and rubble from the building and road fell on top of me. I was barely conscious but I could hear my brother calling my name. I wanted to respond, but I couldn't speak. All I could do was lie there as I heard my brother shouting and cursing as more and more undead surrounded him.
When I felt my consciousness starting to slip, memories started to surface to my mind, my brain desperately searching for something to keep me alive, when suddenly one memory started playing. It was me at our make-shift table back at the camp, our little sister fast asleep on her cot.
"Listen November, I think I found some clues as to who might be behind this darned virus." He said to me in a serious tone.
"Seriously?! Who?" I inquired.
"Well while I was out scouting I found an office building, in a secret room was some lab equipment and tattered notes. But I managed to find a clip-board. On it was a checklist of to-do's. One of which was to update Dr. Xavier" He explained.
"Ok... well just because he had a secret lil lab doesn't mean he's the one behind the dead raising themselves." I said skeptically.
"But I did find proof. Three test tubes, the names were scratched off, and two were broken. But one, one had a dead body in it... a mutant body. And based on a dusty note I found they were running experiments on that thing long before the apocalypse began." My brother said, his cold, neutral look never once wavering.
"Y-You're kidding me..." I said in disbelief.
"Listen November, even if Xavier isn't responsible for the apocalypse, he's connected to the one who did. We just need to investigate more of his labs, then we might finally be able to end this nightmare."
That memory kept playing over and over in my mind 'We could end this nightmare'. I clung to that thought with every bit of life I had. I was determined to get out, to find Xavier's lab and put an end to this virus for my siblings.
"Well, that's the story. Happy now?" November said annoyed.
"Huh, so you and your siblings got separated, and you have no idea if they are even still alive. And wait, where did the explosions even come from?" Leon questioned.
"I wish I knew... it all happened so fast. I just guessed that it was another group of survivors who wanted our area and resources. As for my siblings... I have hope that my little sister is still alive. As for my older brother... I have my doubts. There were so many undead and he was surrounded, he may have been good and had very fast reflexes but there's no way he got out without getting infected." November explained with a cold expression trying to hide his emotions. But the way his fists were tightly balled gave away the hurt and sorrow he felt.
"Well then, we better go find that lab then." Leon said suddenly, standing up and stretching.
"Wait huh?" November replied, confused by his companions' sudden attitude change.
"Well you wanna find this lab so you can try to find a way to end the apocalypse yeah? So let's go, the sooner we get there the sooner we can save the world and your siblings." He remarked with a smile, offering his hand to November. To which November sighed, a small smile tugging at his lips as he accepted Leon's hand up. The two nodded to each other and left the gas station. With the sun setting and ending the day's harsh heat the two boys set off with new found strength towards the lab.
It was now well into the night, everything was pitch dark, the quarter moon not providing them much light. But the two men had finally reached the lab. Pulling out their flashlights and a silent weapon they made their way inside the large building.
"Hey, imagine if that Xavier dude was still alive... What would you do?" Leon asked randomly.
"I'd take my trusty wrench here, beat his face with it then shove it up his a-"
"Ok, ok I get it yeesh man. Although, if he is still alive, and he did start the apocalypse I'd love to pump him full of lead." Leon added, interrupting November.
The two men stumble into a large underground lab. It was filled with test tubes, various lab equipment, computers of every size, and even weapons. They gasp in surprise, looking at each other before descending the stairs into the lab and hopefully towards answers.
