Daenerys Targaryen was a force to be feared, a woman to be revered, a power that should never be underestimated, for she had the ability to reshape the world with the palm of her hand. At that moment, the only multidisciplinary force capable of opposing Queen Targaryen was the Army of the Night King, and no one else. Who could stand against the woman who commanded over half a million soldiers? Who could stand against the woman who had the largest naval fleet in the world? Who could stand against three adult dragons? Who could oppose Daenerys Targaryen? The Queen of the Iron Throne.
There was no man in the world capable of stopping her, and this was a truth that Aegon refused to believe from the moment he began planning to seize power from his own aunt. All of his friends warned him, all of his advisors warned him, everyone warned and begged him not to challenge Daenerys, for her fury and hatred knew no bounds, and certainly, no mercy would come to those who opposed her and declared their loyalty to Aegon.
The men who were able to flee did so at the first opportunity, and those who were fools were deceived by a cheap speech and would die the worst possible death. Those who had any sense fled the city hastily as soon as the true extent of Daenerys' military power was confirmed, as soon as the first descriptions of the ships arrived.
They said there were so many black flags with enormous three-headed dragons, so many flags that it was impossible to see anything else on the horizon except the ships. One of the generals of the prince knew that less than one-third of that military force would actually be used in an attack against them. It was as if the queen wanted to send a loud and clear message. The Dragon Queen wanted to warn everyone that any attempt to overthrow her government or harm those she loved would never go unpunished, and if necessary, she would cross the ocean with all the military force she possessed to crush any rebel or dictator who rose against what she believed in.
"How many soldiers do we have right now? I need to organize the troops as quickly as possible, that bitch is already approaching the continent again!" Aegon asked, still struggling to contain his fury after losing one of his greatest assets in this war. "That damn woman won't win so easily. If my mother's people managed to bring down a dragon, I will achieve the same feat."
One of the commanders approached carefully, fear gleaming in a barely perceptible layer, knowing he would be the one responsible for delivering the bad news to the exiled prince. Harold thought the prince was a fool, but since he was driven by money and wouldn't be fighting in the battle, he cared little about who would live or die. He didn't fear for the people involved in the war, but he feared the spilling of innocent blood. The fear was just a fantasy to make Aegon believe he was in control of everything, when in reality, the man had already lost the war before it even began.
"My lord, we only have 40% of the troops, unfortunately, the other 60% deserted when they heard we had the chance to fight the usurper who stole your throne in open field," he delivered the news as if shocked, seizing an opportunity to flatter the prince and inflate his ego about his claim to the Iron Throne.
The soldiers were loyal to themselves in cases like this, where the true leader of the organization was far too old to make decisions and left an irresponsible man like Aegon in charge, which was dangerous. There were defector messages sent out during the night when most were sleeping, and in addition to fleeing, those soldiers also spread the word to the civilian population that they should escape while they still had the chance. Anyone with any sense didn't want to stay in a city that would soon be the stage for an unrestrained slaughter; they weren't afraid of the prince, they were afraid of Daenerys Targaryen.
Who wouldn't be afraid in such a situation?
The city was left with 30% of civilians and 40% of soldiers; those who stayed, stayed to protect the families who refused to leave.
Harold knew that, even with numerous darts, it was practically impossible to take down an adult and young dragon in mid-air. The shot that killed Meraxes had been a stroke of luck, a one-in-a-million chance, a single shot that hit the only weak spot of a dragon in the air: the eye. It was a conflict that had no chance of being won; everyone knew it, no one in that room was a dreamer, no one in that room was devoid of intelligence, at least that's what Harold wanted to believe.
"Let's focus all our artillery on her dragons; if we bring down the dragons, we'll have the upper hand, since her army is at sea, and keeping them there is much easier. I want you to find our best shooters; they're our best chance. We'll come out of this war victorious, and then we can finally return home to Westeros!" he shouted to the men, raising a glass of wine high.
All the generals toasted with the prince, toasting for the last night. Silently, they had come to the same conclusion: someone needed to stop this man who believed himself to be an unbeatable king. It was time for the organization to have a new leader, a more rational and astute leader. No one knew who would kill Aegon first: whether it would be Daenerys or the Golden Company.
That night was the last time these men had peace, for soon the war would reach their doorstep, and the desperation came from knowing that Daenerys' ships had stopped; none of them had moved for days, forming a blockade around the city. One of the nobles who tried to negotiate with the queen ended up dead after offering Athena's head to Daenerys. They called the man Loki, a good ruler who was killed for a foolish mistake.
Aegon was afraid; now everyone could see it clearly, especially after he had come up with an escape plan in case the conflict was lost. He wanted to keep diving into the illusions of his mind, wanted to keep ignoring his responsibilities as he drank the finest wine and visited the city's brothels for entertainment. But now, not even that could bring peace to the man, for the letter his aunt had sent made even the bones of the cruelest man tremble with fear.
