I had spent the whole night awake, working hard to get it just right. It had to be perfect if I wanted mine to stand out among all the others that would be amassed today. Carefully wrapping the finished product, I placed it inside a shiny red bag and began the long walk to school.
--------
I could hear the whispers around me, the girls snickering as I passed them in the halls. Stiffening my spine, I continued walking forward. When I heard the boys begin wondering who my 'victim' would be, I felt my heart begin to hurt a little but refused to let them see it.
I refused to let them know their words effected me, even if just a bit. That would be like letting them win.
--------
It wasn't until lunch was almost over that I finally saw his red hair standing out as he walked out from the crowd of people around him. Taking a deep breath, I got up and nervously followed him as he walked around the corner of the building. Clenching the handles of the bag tightly between my fingers, I quickened my steps as I tried to catch up to him.
"W-wait!" I called out, my voice catching awkwardly on the word. I could feel my face heat up as he turned around, one eyebrow raised as he looked at me.
"Yea? Do ya need somethin'?" His deep voice rumbled as he spoke. I could feel my heart skip a beat at the sound.
"H-here..." I looked down as I held the red bag out, the sun shining on the surface as I waited in hopes he would accept the small gift. I almost dropped it when I felt his warm fingers brush against mine, rubbing my hands together after he took the bag from me to try and stop the tingling feeling in them.
"Ah, umm... Thank ya." I glanced up quickly to see him rubbing the back of his head, his eyes looking to the side. I couldn't tell if it was because he had gotten the gift, or because it was me giving it.
"Welcome." I whispered the word before turning and hurrying away, eager to get away from the embarrassment I was feeling.
--------
I didn't see him again until the last class of the day, the only one we shared. I did my best not to look towards him, but I could feel something drawing my gaze like a magnet. My breath caught at what I finally saw.
Sitting carefully in the center of his desk, the boy's fingers gently reaching out to touch it from time to time, sat the small red fox with an eye-patch and hook that I had worked on all night to finish. I was about to turn back, my face turning red from a mix of happiness and embarrassment, when I saw those golden eyes look up at me.
The blush reached my ears when I saw his soft looking lips whisper 'thank you' before curving into a warm smile.
