Compensate

Chelsea wasn't present at school for two whole weeks. Rumors started spreading like a wildfire. People made crazy assumptions like maybe she died, or she was kidnapped. I didn't know what to believe but hearing the rumors were interesting.

Our teacher had stepped out of the room for a couple of minutes so of course the classroom was extra loud and disrespectful.

"Maya?" Alex snapped his fingers in front if my face. Alex was a class friend whom I had three classes with. He was also my middle school crush. Of course I knew it wouldn't work out so I just stuck with being his friend.

             "I'm sorry," I apologized.

"Thinking about Chelsea, huh?" He muffled. He had very dark brown hair but because of the lighting it looked very black. His eyes were a deep set of brown which complimented his beautiful Asian eyes. Alex was very handsome but I'm not sure he noticed it.

         I pouted. "Yes."

It was silent for while until he spoke up. "Are you good at giving advice?"

I shrugged. "Depends, what is it?"

"How do you know if someone likes you? I mean...what do girls do when they like a guy." He ran his fingers through his hair. "Of course, I'm just asking for a friend."

Sure, whatever floats your boat, I chuckled to myself. "What kind of girl is she?"

He smiled at the ground. "She's the rebel type. Her personality is very flamboyant. It's like she doesn't want anyone to hold her down. Like...um...she wants to do her own thing...um...be her own person, I guess."

I chuckled at his behavior. "Well..." I started. "Your jokes suck so if she laughs at them a lot then she's definitely the one. Hold onto her tightly."

Alex gave me a slight punch on the shoulder. "My jokes are worth diamonds and it's not me remember? It's my friend."

"Whatever you say." I looked at the side of my eyes while gently tugging on my ear. Then I got serious. "You know she likes you when she looks in your eyes as if you guys are the only people in the room. It's obvious she only has eyes for you when she doesn't reciprocate any of her attractions towards another person."

"Like the look you're giving me right now?" He pointed his index finger at my eye.

I quickly looked away. "Exactly!" I laughed awkwardly. "She'll constantly find a way to make time with you regardless of her busy schedule. That's a foolproof way of knowing whether she likes you or not."

Alex played with his pencil on my desk. "We do constantly make plans....does that count?" Alex stole my breath when he looked up at me.

Before I could say a word to him, the bell rung. He was hasty as he got up and threw his backpack on his shoulder.

My heart sunk as I watched him wave to me before exiting the classroom. I felt empty sitting by myself. Alex was my crush for a long time. I tried to push my feelings away because I knew he didn't like me....not like that. It didn't end up working and it felt like I dug myself deeper, I started to like him even more.

After school ended I was to report to Mr. Daniel's classroom. He was my sixth period teacher.

"Yeah?" I slowly shut the door behind me.

"I'm afraid that you're falling behind in my class."

I frowned. "Really?"

"Maybe we can compensate?" He looked at me not as a student.....but something more. I didn't like the look that he gave me.

My brows furrowed.

What was this old man talking about? I thought.
