It was late in the night when four police officers came knocking on the door. I was deep in sleep but the loud pounding shook me right awake. My mother and I both opened our door's at the same time. I looked at her with half open, half closed eyes. She had her hair held up in a bonnet. She had on a nightdress that came down to her ankle. Even though she was still young she dressed ten years older than her actual age.
Boy were we surprised when we opened the door.
"That's her!" Kate pointed at my mother. She had her hands on her hips and her hips cocked to the side. Her pale green eyes was lit with fire. Her body seemed less voluptuous from the last time I saw her. "That's the," she tried to refrain from swearing. "She tried to frame me."
It was like Kate's gaze froze my mother. She wouldn't blink or move. It was freakishly weird.
"Andrea Perales, you are under arrest for the murder of José Perales. You may also face time for tax evasion, aiding and abetting a fugitive, accessory to murder, un-armed robbery, fraud, and burglary."
I lost count of the amount of times I blinked as the police officer read my mother her Miranda rights. My mother was quick to hug me before they seized her arms.
Her hug which once felt so familiar took a turn for the worse. Her skin brushed against mine like sandpaper. I touched her arm as they wrapped around me tighter. Her skin started to feel smooth and kind of prickly. It was like I was too slow to process what was happening. I was taking it in with my eyes but my body refused to digest it.
"Mom?" I mumbled before they took her away. I reached my arm out in hopes that she would grab it so I could feel that sense of security that once wrapped me like a blanket. She was gone....and I was alone. Emotionally and physically.
