The Weekend

Me, Lilly (my sister) and my aunt Maggie had a really normal one. On Saturday we went to my Mum and Dad's grave. You might be shocked but yes my parents are dead. It happened three years ago; I was in town when I got the phone call from Maggie, she told me to get to the hospital ASAP! I arrived at St. James's an hour after she rang. We sat in the relative's room for hours on end, completely in the dark about what was happening. Then at sixteen minutes past seven on Saturday, 12th July a surgical nurse came in. She said with a compassionate look on her face "I'm sorry to informed but Jeffery and Lisa Watson past away a few moments ago after a fatal collision with their car and an oil tanker." It took us until this year to get back to normal, well as close as we could. Lilly was nine and didn't really understand, so I sunk into the background when everybody was fussing around with her. But it was okay because she was young, but sometimes I wish that people would have asked me, how I was doing and how I was coping.

Sunday was brilliant. So here's what happened; I woke up at about eleven o'clock, my aunt and Lilly were at church still, (yep I'm a Catholic) I don't go anymore, I last went about three years ago. I lost the faith. Later I got a phone call, it was an unknown number, but I still answered. It was Maxi! She was really upset and talking about her grandma, how she was really sick. I asked her why she rang me and not anyone else. She said "I needed to talk to somebody, and w-well I think you're really sweet." I asked her where she wanted to meet me. She wanted to come round. I was a bit taken back, seeing as we'd only known each other a week, but I let her come round. The doorbell rang about quarter to twelve. I was still in the shower and I had forgotten she was coming, can't think why. I grabbed the first towel; it was small and pink, Lilly's not mine. I ran down the stairs and opened the door dripping wet with the towel just covering my bum. I was so embarrassed, why couldn't it have been the milk man? She looked flushed, I would have done to. I ran back up the stairs, on the way up I shouted "come in." I flung on some clothes and came back down stairs. She tried to make me feel better with a little joke about how she liked me more with my clothes off. I wasn’t laughing.

I made her a cup of tea and we started talking. She told me that her Nan had been mugged on her way to bingo (apparently she's really good). You could tell Maxi thought the world of her, all the funny stories she had; when Maxi was sick when she was younger she would go round to her Nan's and then they would go up to the sweet shop and get loads of sweets for when she was better. She had a little story with her brother in it, when her Nan gave her a £10 note and her Nan said "share this with you brother," so Maxi took her literally and ripped the note in half, her brother's name is Josh and he's ten-years-old. When I started to ask questions about him; "How old is he? What sports does he like? Rugby? Football?" She got all jumpy. I thought the worst, he was dead but then she stated to talk.

"He loves rugby, his favourite team is The Harlequins," she stuttered. "But he..."

"But what?" I asked impatiently.

"He has a severe case of down syndrome." I was thrown. I didn't expect that. I saw that it upset her so I started to talk to her about rugby; I told her that I played for the school and that we had a big tournament coming up. I asked if she would like to come with Josh to one of our games she smiled and we looked at each other in a way I've never looked at someone before. Then she got all jumpy again. "So what about your family? You got a brother or sister? What are your mum and dad like?" I didn't know if I should tell her what happened, that my parents were dead, so I started with Lilly.

"I have a little sister, she's called Lilly." She smiled again (her face is so perfect). "She's becoming a right little madam." She laughed in such a perfect tone. I tried to stay off the subject of my parents but she just had to asked, didn't she. Luckily Maggie and Lilly came back in the nick of time only Maggie saw the girls' shoes and had to come up a say hello. She tapped on the door and came in. Maxi stood up, "You must be Slick, I mean Simon's mum." Maggie felt awkward; I think anyone would, but being Maggie she spoke up.

"Don't you know Simon's parents died three years ago? I'm his aunt." MAGGIE!

"Oh right, I’d better go" said Maxi and she literally ran out of the room.

When she had gone I went over to George's house. His brother had come back from two years of travelling so I just snuck in and hung out in Georges room for a bit. When he finally came in; he shrieked in horror, like a girl! After he had recovered from the shock, he noticed I was upset, I didn't want to say anything. He knew I was thinking about my parents. He asked me what had made me think about them and I told him I was fine. We watched a film later; one of those silly girly ones about a popular boy who falls for a loner girl. I felt as though that should be me, I wanted it to be me. I had fallen for Maxi and why couldn't she fall for me? But that wouldn't happen overnight so I'd just have to grin and bear it.

I left George's house to have dinner with Maggie and Lilly at about six o’clock but when I came back I couldn't smell the roast chicken like I usually could. Instead I could smell vegetable soup (Lilly's favourite). I shouted up the stairs and Maggie came to the top. "Shush" she told me with her finger on her lips. After that she went out of my view and then came down about three minutes later with a silver washing up bowl with nasty orange sick in it. I asked her what was wrong with Lilly, apparently she has a fever and she can barely speak. When I went to bed I popped in and saw she was sleeping so I sat on her bed. She woke up started to gag and then she threw up all over my clothes. OH MY GOD, it stank! Plus my brand new jeans were completely ruined. I legged it out of the room and hopped straight into the shower; it calmed me down but I had to scrub and scrub to get the smell off me. I put a clean pair of pyjamas on and fell asleep listing to my iPod, Secondhand Serenade to be exact.
