Maxi’s torment dun dun dunnnn

"Don't you want a cup of tea?" he asked as he walked into the kitchen. I stopped, a bit stunned he would welcome me in after I had just upset Maxi. Yet I still walked into the kitchen. He was boiling the kettle but then started to talk. "I'm Greg, Maxi's older brother? Well half brother, I guess. We have the same dad, that sod Rob." Thank God, I thought, he was just her brother. We sat down at the round kitchen table and I sipped my tea. We looked at each other. "So I guess you're the infamous Slick" he said. "Yep that's me," I laughed. He smiled at me and I raised my eyebrows; he knew I wanted to know more. So he explained.

"Well you know that I'm Maxi's big brother and that our dad is a bit of a bastard. Well... Maxi loves to spend time at my flat and she always has done; ever since she was old enough to realise what was going on. My dad, I swear has a screw loose. He used to hit Julie, Maxi's mum. When Maxi got older he would lunge out at her whenever her mum wasn't there, so whenever she could she would come and stay at mine." I hadn’t known any of this about Maxi, why hadn’t she told me? He continued as I pondered. "So when Rob found out that she was pregnant he went mad at her, beating her senseless and telling her that she had to get an abortion. She refused of course; she would never forgive herself if she did that. It would forever eat her up inside, knowing that she had ended a life before it had even started. She came over that night in floods of tears. She had bruises everywhere, she was so worried that she would lose the baby and you wouldn't even know about it, so I took her to the hospital. Then when you rang that time and she just poured out to you, her mind went blank and completely forgot that she hadn't told you that she was having your baby. When she put the phone down she felt so bad that she couldn't tell you where she was - in hospital, because she might lose the baby that you had only just found out about. When she told you not to come round, that was because the doctor had just come into the room with the results." So that's who I had heard - not her dad coming to beat her up! So I wasn’t there when she really needed me. Fan-bloody-tastic! He was still talking, "But the baby was okay and she spent the night in hospital, and was released the next day. I told her that I would pick her up but I couldn't stay with her. I dropped her at home and put her on strict bed rest and gave her the remote control and a lot of chocolate. This next bit I'm not too sure about because I wasn't there, but she swears blind it happened and I believed her whole heartedly. As should you-" he spoke sternly "- she heard the door bell ring and she didn't feel the need to get up, so she left it. When the bell continued to chime she made her way to the door but little did she know what she was getting herself in for. Guess who it was, just guess-" I shrugged my shoulders. "- it was my dad. He pushed his way into the flat, she couldn't put up a fight being pregnant and still trying to recover from the last beating he gave her. He called her a bitch and said she was stupid. ‘You are not going to have this baby, I swear on my life that you will not disgrace this family!' he yelled at her. Apparently he majorly lost it when she told him that the only thing disgracing the family was him. He shoved her and she fell onto the coffee table. Apparently she had managed to grab her phone as she fell and hit speed dial, my number. I picked up, not sure what was going on, I couldn't hear anything. But then I started to listen more intently. I could hear her crying. And Rob shouting at her in the background, 'You must have shit for brains getting yourself knocked up like that' he yelled at her-"

Oh my gosh, I thought, all this time I should have been there for Maxi - looking out for her, protecting her, but instead I was at home feeling sorry for myself.

"-when I heard Maxi scream (one scream) I turned the car around and started to speed my way back home, still listening to what was going on back at the flat. 'You can't hurt me, the neighbours will hear and call the police, then you'll get done for assault and I'm pretty sure this isn't your first offence,' Maxi tried to plead with him. I knew that would never work. 'Don't you dare talk to me like that, I am your father and I will do what I want with you.' My dad was angry now and I heard the slap he gave her across the face and she screamed again (two screams). 'Fine, if I can't scar you physically then I'll scar you mentally!' I thought to myself what that could mean, then I heard a thing that no man should ever hear on the phone- a zip being undone. Oh bugger I was thinking to myself I had to get home now! But I was still about ten minutes away and by then it could be too late. Then a shockingly piercing sound was sent down my phone (three screams). 'Oh My GOD! Please no!' she was begging him, some words unrecognisable - she was sobbing so much-"

So Maxi had gone through all this. I could suddenly see why she was scared when I touched her. She must have been traumatised. Being sexually abused by your own father, the man that is meant to love you forever, no matter what. The guy who is supposed to have unconditional love for the child he helped bring into this world- it just makes me feel sick.

Greg continued. "Then I heard Maxi try to struggle out of Rob's grip but she didn't succeed - she screamed again (four screams). This was hurting me so much inside but I doubt as much as it was hurting her. I was now pulling into my road and I couldn't find anywhere to park. When I pulled up into a bay I heard a haunting scream (five screams). I sprinted into the building and ran flat out up the stairs. I nearly broke the door of its hinges as I stormed in with anger burning in my eyes; fury pulsating in every inch of my body. I pulled Rob off her and knocked him over and he fell onto the broken coffee table- it luckily knocked him out. I ran to Maxi and held her tight, trying to comfort her. My baby sister should not have to go through all this. I then called the police. So that's about it."

"Whoa." I could say nothing more, I was dumbstruck. It wasn’t right, you hear about this things on the news every once in a while but it doesn't actually happen to people you know and love.

"So any questions?" he asked bluntly.

"Well I guess so... um... well... you know Rob? Where is he now?"

"He's on bail until his trial, but he’s not allowed near us. But still, I’m not leaving Maxi’s side until he’s behind bars. They think he could get about ten years."

"Will Maxi have to stand up in court?" I didn't like that idea.

"Yes, she will" he replied solemnly.

"She doesn't need to be putting extra stress on the baby right now."

"She'll be fine as long as you're there, that's all she wants; you and the baby. One big happy family, like the one she was meant to have." We heard footsteps and I rushed to see Maxi descending the stairs like the princess she really is. In the kitchen I heard Greg muttering "Five screams, it shouldn't have taken me that long, I should never have left her. There should never have been any screams, not one single sound of pain." I guess this affected Greg more than I thought.
