Welcome to the world

It was eleven days until both Maxi and Sam were ready to come out of the hospital, but the wait was worth it. I had my two favourite things in the world home, and you could not find a happier seventeen-year-old boy anywhere.

Maxi and Sam were all I wanted. The feeling I got when I held my baby boy beat every other, and when he held my forefinger in his tiny hand I begged him to never let go. He grew cuter and more beautiful every day, he only cried when no-one held him and his eyes widened when you smiled at him. He was perfect. Everything was perfect. Maxi was just as happy as me, and although she was exhausted and restless, she glowed.

But Maxi felt secluded, she hadn’t seen anyone except our families in weeks. She was nervous when I suggested inviting some friends over to meet the baby, but she agreed because she knew how anxious I was to see my best friend. So we set a date, I went shopping for food to feed the guests, and Maxi called round and invited six people to see the now three-week-old Sam. Maxi and I were congratulated but Sam got the most attention that day, even though he slept through a lot of it. He was passed round between George, Charlotte, and his usual visitors Julie, Greg, Maggie, and Lily, all of whom adored him. He was given presents, most of which were tiny baby-boy outfits: blue with pictures of boats and trains just like I imagined. Sam was fed his milk while the rest of us picked at crisps and nuts, drank fizzy drinks and laughed at Julie’s stories of what Maxi was like as a baby. It was nice, but it was over quickly. Maxi and Sam began to show how tired they were after a few hours, so most the guests said their goodbyes and left. I had missed George, and I would have liked to have been able to catch up with him some more. After everyone else had left, he patted my back and said ‘well done mate’, and quietly slipped a Play Station 2 game into my hand before grinning cheekily and walking out the door. I had forgotten how young we still were; it seemed I had almost skipped a stage of my life. I wouldn’t change a thing though.

Just as I was heading up to bed the doorbell rang. I thought nothing of it. At Greg’s people are often coming and going. Maxi heard it also and laughing she suggested that George had probably forgotten his keys again. She got to the door before me. It wasn’t George. It wasn’t somebody we wanted to see. It was someone this house had grown to fear. Rob. Maxi and I reacted in the same way, “Sam!” She tried to shut the door before running to our son but Rob was too strong for her, he burst through the door no trouble at all.

“Maxi! Go get Sam and call the police!” she was petrified and couldn’t move. That allowed Rob to get closer to her. Just as he reached her she snapped out of her daze and went to get Sam. Yet Rob was too fast and grabbed her, she tried to jerk away but he was too strong for her.

“You can’t get away from me a second time. If I couldn’t kill that thing before it was born I’m going to kill it now!” his tone was calm yet threatening all at the same time. Her protectiveness for Sam kicked in and she pulled away.

She got to the bedroom with both Rob and I close on her tail. Rob went to grab her but he tripped on Sam’s favourite teddy. He still managed to grab her foot and pull her down. It seemed as if Maxi fell in slow motion, because she was so close to Sam that when she fell she hit her head on the cot. I was frozen in place with confusion. My mind couldn’t register what had happened. Once again a scream from Maxi was all that it took for me to come back to the world. I looked to where Rob had fallen and he was just getting up. I rushed to him and kicked him, anything I could do to stop him getting to my family. Once he was knocked out I rushed to Maxi, whose breathing was staggered. When I saw the blood rushing down the side of her face it reminded me of the time in Egypt when I saw Miss Launsheer get shot, but not even that had knotted my stomach like this moment did. Her breathing was shallow.

“Maxi, I love you please stay awake” I cried as her eyes started to close.

“I love you too Slick” she said, her voice strained. This was it- I was going to lose her, she wasn’t even 17 yet. “I’m glad we met in geography- you’ve changed my world.”

“You know, that’s so bloody corny,” I said heartily as a tear ran down my face.

“Well I’m sorry, I thought it was romantic,” she smiled.

“I will always love you,” I whispered as yet another tear ran down my cheek. Right on cue Sam woke up crying and I looked to see his watery eyes looking back at me. When I looked back to see the same eyes on his mother, they were empty. I guess one life comes into the world as another leaves.

Sad, sad times! I was crying when I wrote this :'(

This is the last chapter- then the epilogue-  IT'S NEARLY OVER!
