Chapter 9 || Even flow
Iruka had brought Ace into the courtyard, it was dusty, with a bare dirt patch and various targets scattered around, all at different angles and distances. "The first part of your exam is to test your physical capabilities." Iruka explained cheerfully to the small girl following behind him.
There was an array of different weapons, some which she had learnt the name of during her cram study session.
Kunai and shuriken were the main two, set out on a bench ready to be handled.
Iruka gestured to the bench of weapons, "to begin we'll test your aim and how you go handling the basic ninja weapons." He explained with a soft reassuring smile.
Ace nodded, coming up to the bench at Iruka's wave forward. "Can you tell me what these weapons are called? Or would you like me to list them off" he asked kindly.
Ace nodded, leaning forward to pick up a kunai, "This is a Kunai" she states, her tone as if she were talking to a child. A little condescending for someone who had only just learnt what that was, But she wanted to make sure she came across like she knew her stuff. Like she belonged in the ninja world.
She set the kunai down with a light clink and picked up a shuriken, before holding it up in a similar manner, "this one's a Shuriken." She states. Looking up at her examiner, waiting for him to giver her the all clear.
Iruka smiles down at her, quickly picking up on the tone to her words and adjusting his approach. She didn't seem to be taking kindly to being guided every step of the way. He ascertained independence was a high value of this new student.
"Very good, now please throw them at that target over there." He instructed, stepping off to the side to watch. "There's a line on the ground just below you to use as a guide."
Sure enough there was a thick white line at her feet, depicting the appropriate distance to stand away from the target. It was the easiest target in the field, the one out in the plain open, with no angles or movement to it. A big red assortment of rings, with a blue bullseye in the centre.
She stanced herself at the line, relaxing her muscles and simply feeling out the distance first. She had never really thrown knives per se, but when she was younger she used to throw rocks at bottles when the power went out as a game with her brother and some of the neighbourhood kids.
Surely it would be similar? She used to be the best at that game.
She lets out a small breath, drawing back her arm, feeling the balance and weight of the weapon in her hand before launching it forward.
The metal clanks against the target, hitting the centre dot. Ace lights up a little with hope, before her hopes are dashed terribly by the sound of the knife clattering to the ground.
She had hit the target with the handle somehow.
Iruka seems surprised still. Her aim is impeccable, though her handling could definitely use work...
Ace plucked another from the bench, taking another second to really feel the metal in her hand, trying to figure out where exactly she went wrong.
And she launches it, with a similar results, however this time the side of the knife ends up lodged in the target, just shy of the bullseye.
She grimaces and turns back to the table ready to try again.
Out of the five kunai laid out for her to throw, about two of them stick in the target properly, the last two of her throws. One lodged in the first ring from the bullseye and the other finally lodged in the blue.
