Chapter 12 || Wrong house, Dumbass
Naruto wanders up the stairs to Ace's apartment block with the dark haired girl peacefully sleeping in his arms. He took care to walk as slowly and smoothly as he could, determined not to stir the girl in his arms.
Tears had been leaking quietly down her face ever since they had left the Hokage's office, staining her pale complexion with their tracks, the dim light bringing out their shine.
She no longer looked as if she was in pain, but Naruto didn't think he'd ever seen her express anything like that to begin with. Never once had he seen her cry like she was right now.
It was much too dark along the walkways so late at night. The moon hiding it's shining face in the shadows , leaving little light for the lands below.
Naruto carefully paces his way towards the door he remembered to be Ace's. He knew she had mentioned earlier about her bad habit of leaving her door unlocked, so he prayed quietly in his mind that this was one of the times she had forgotten to lock her apartment up.
This was the second time Naruto had been to her apartment since meeting the girl a year ago. She had invited the gang around for a meal only once. After the mess they had left, she swore she would never again. Unfortunately for Naruto, she had stuck to her word on that.
Hesitantly and awkwardly, Naruto manages to maneuver Ace in his arms enough to give him a free hand to twist the knob with.
At first there was resistance, which made Naruto panic ever so slightly, but in the end the handle gave way, twisting open with a subtle creak of the door.
Letting out a sigh of relief, he crossed the threshold into Ace's apartment.
It looked a little different than he remembered, the furniture layed out in different ways than they had the last time he had visited. He observed quietly, looking around for her couch, which had now been pushed up against the opposite wall.
With careful quiet strides, he makes his way over before lowering the girl as gently as he could into the navy blue cushioned seat.
She stirred, making Naruto pause, holding his breath and staring intently down at the girl, focusing solely on making sure she remains asleep.
As she returns into her solid slumber, he can't help but let out a sigh of relief once again, relaxing his posture again before smiling to himself.
He had managed to get Ace home safe.
However the accomplished feeling was short lived. When cold metal pressed to his neck, his blood ran cold.
An intruder in her apartment. How could he not have noticed.
"What are you doing here." A cold voice asks roughly, pressing the blade taught to his neck, daring to split the delicate skin along Naruto's throat. Naruto recognised that voice, but fear clouded the recognition as he panicked to figure out a way to save Ace from this intruder.
"Don't you dare hurt her!" He exclaims, forgetting about volume as he angrily reprimands the assailant behind him.
A tense silence follows his shout. "...What?" The voice was less cold now, the only tone left to him being confusion.
"You heard me!" Naruto proclaims, "If you broke into Ace's apartment to hurt her, I'll kill you!" He shouts.
"Ace's?... Wait-"
Sasuke doesn't manage to get his words out, because as soon as the kunai at Naruto's throat relaxed away from the skin, his head was flung back into Sasuke's nose.
