azariah loved the quiet moments she got when babysitting wheezie

maybe it was because she was so used to the chaos of her own life

john b's overbearing texts, her dad's nagging about her health, the way everything felt like it was constantly on the edge of disaster

but with wheezie, there was no drama just a quiet girls afternoon

wheezie was sprawled out on the couch, flipping through a magazine with her feet kicked up

"you want to do something?" azariah smiled, sitting down beside her.

wheezie glanced at her, raising an eyebrow. "likeee what?"

azariah looked up and thought about it for a moment. she wasn't really in the mood to go out and do anything crazy

"i don't know, want to make cookies or something? i'm pretty sure the last batch i made looked more like pancakes than cookies."

wheezie grinned. "cookies sound good. we should totally try again and maybe you won't burn them this time."

azariah laughed, looking over at the girl with her hands up in a playful tone

"hey, you were supposed to be my backup last time!"

wheezie scoffed and nudged azariah with her elbow, "i was on snack duty. you know taste testing."

"oh yeah right right. my bad i remember now." azariah playfully shoved her back

wheezie didn't hesitate and got right up "let's do it. but we better make sure they're actually good and edible!"

the two of them pulled out the ingredients. flour, sugar, chocolate chips, eggs, and soon enough

the kitchen was filled with the familiar scent of baking cookies. wheezie stood next to her, stirring the dough and making random faces at the batter

azariah couldn't help but laugh. wheezie was always doing the most, but in the best way

as they baked, azariah couldn't help but think about how much her life had changed in the last few weeks

she hadn't told anyone else about her diagnosis because didn't even know if she could

really. it was a huge weight to carry. but wheezie didn't know any of that

to her, she just knew azariah as the girl who could bake cookies and laugh with her like they were kids again

and for a moment, that was everything and the only thing azariah needed

they finished the cookies, and for the rest of the afternoon, everything went as normal

azariah tidied the house a little while the young cameron girl watched love island and they two talked and talked

when the cookies were finally done in the oven, both girls sat on the counter, eating them straight off the tray, laughing over how thry had burnt the edges and added too much sugar

and during this time azariah allowed herself to pretend that nothing was wrong

nothing at all

and she felt free and happy
