it was one of those days where the sun seemed a little too bright, and everything felt a little too loud
today azariah felt like absolute crap. she was at the chateau sitting on the edge of the dock, legs dangling over the side
she didn't really want to go home yet, and she definitely didn't want to deal with the chaos at her dad's house
she had always come here when she needed a break. the air felt different here
just as she was about to settle in to her thoughts, a familiar voice interrupted her
"you know, i've always thought you looked like you're about to solve world problems when you sit like that."
azariah rolled her eyes when she saw pope heyward grinning at her. "world problems huh? that sounds pretty ambitious pope."
"yeah well you've got the look of a genius" pope winked sitting down next to her close enough that their shoulders brushed
both were they were trying to take in the peace of the water
pope let out a sigh as he dropped down beside her "so what's up?" azariah asked, her voice soft but still held concern
"oh i'm just thinking" pope replied, staring like he was seeing something no one else could "about?"
he shrugged but didn't answer right away. she didn't know he wasn't in the mood to talk or if it was the heat but something about pope felt off
"hey" azariah nudged him with a smile "you good?"
he turned to her looking at her with a small smile back, the one he gave when he didn't want anyone to see what was really going on
"yeah, just a lot going on with my dad putting pressure on me, you know how it is." he waved his hand like it was no big deal
azariah went silent for a second
pope had always been one to listen to his parents and do everything to make them proud, even if that meant hiding his emotions and feeling from everyone
but she knew him too well to let him get away with pretending everything was fine
except what she didn't know what that he was secretly doing the same to her
"are you sure?" she asked, raising an eyebrow
pope's eexpression softened for a second as he looked her in the eyes "are you?"
at that she was slightly taken aback. his tone changed and he now seemed defensive which made azariah tilt her head in confusion
he didn't anything more about that after. instead he looked up at the sky
"you know sometimes i wish things were different" he whispered "what do you mean?"
finally pope spoke again, his voice softer this time. "you can talk to me you know that azariah."
azariah huffed with a soft smile "yeah i know. i tell you everything."
the heyward boy just hummed. it annoyed azariah when he did that. because that meant he knew
"well not everything."
the girl sighed, knowing what he was getting at yes i do." she paused for a moment "it's just complicated."
pope looked at her with a slight frown "everything's complicated riah, you don't have to go through it alone though."
azariah nodded "thank you, i'm just not ready to have everyone knows what going on with me yet."
he reached over and nudged her shoulder, a grin appearing on his face again
"i get it, but if you're gonna solve world problems, you'll need me around to keep the genius vibes flowing."
azariah couldn't help but laugh loudly, her body relaxing a little. "yeah i guess you've got a point!"
they sat together for a little longer, watching the water, just enjoying their nice friendship moments
both cherishing the jokes and stories they shared, knowing things would be completely different soon
"you still wanna hang out tomorrow?" she asked with a smile "of course i'm not going anywhere!"
azariah laughed as she watched pope cheer out of happiness

shorter chapter again, but i wanted to have some scenes with pope because he's so underrated and i feel like we don't see much of in being best friends with the main character in books
but don't worry each of the pogues will be getting their own scene with her
