it was the afternoon when azariah walked through the door of her mom's house, her body aching from ballet practice

scarlett, her dance teacher had given her a ride home not feeling safe letting the girl ride her bike. it was weird since she's her moms best friend and she was grateful because it was hot out and she didn't have any energy

her head still felt like it was floating

she had barely stepped inside when she heard her mom's voice from the kitchen

"az baby is that you?"

"yeah, it's me!" she yelled back, dropping her bag by the back door and kicked off her shoes

she walked into the kitchen, where her mom was leaning against the counter, flipping through some mail

she looked exhausted, her hair piled up in a messy bun

"hi mom, sorry i didn't say wake up before I left thugs morning?" azariah walked by grabbing an apple and banana from the bowl on the counter

her mom exhaled, rubbing her temples. "it's ok baby don't apologize. who came and picked you up then?"

azariah took a bite of her apple "your bestie, and she dropped me off too."

she noticed how tired her mom looked even though she probably just woke up "you should rest."

her mom gave her a look. one with her eyebrows raised "sweetheart you should too."

azariah ignored that and kept eating slowly, pretending like she didn't hear the way her mom's voice had into that familiar worried tone

and her mom noticed her daughter ignoring her

so she didn't push it "well then" deja sighed and changed the subject "how was practice, the show is just four days away"

azariah shrugged leaning against the counter. "it was fine just a lot."

her mom studied her for a moment. azairah's tone was so monotone and she didn't see excited

it was extremely unusual for her to be sounding like a robot when it came to dance

this time she decided to nag her with the questions "are you pushing yourself too hard?" she put her hand on her hip and raise an eyebrow

"i'm finee mom" azariah said quickly

too quickly. she looked down at the counter, tracing the marble patterns with her fingertips. "i just want it to be perfect, you know? it's my last show, and we're only doing one performance because of me. scarlett said she doesn't want me excreting myself by doing multiple so—"
