I turn around to be greeted by a heart leaping sight. Not really, but it sure isn't nice when a 6,1 giant is stood right behind you. I stare at him with wide eyes, spooked while the rest of the students disperse.
"Scared? Rightfully so. Let's get moving."
And with that he begins on his stride down the corridor.
"Where are we moving?"
"To investigate, of course, plebian."
I do a little jog and catch up to him. I walk beside him at his pace.
"Plebian? That's new. I prefer bartender."
"Well you told me not to say that, so I thought to switch it up a little."
"I still prefer bartender. Anyways, where are we actually going?"
"Are you going deaf? I said we are investigating."
"Investigating, why?"
He grabs my shoulders and steers me into a corner, glancing around to make sure nobody is here and speaking in a hushed tone.
"If you are going to continue whining like a child I won't hesitate to leave you to navigate the rest on your own. The way you blurt out stupid questions without thought or regard to those who may be around you. We need to make the impression that we are assisting in the investigation, {Y/N}. It's painful to hear someone who is supposed to be so smart act like an idiot."
I pause. I DO NOT like to be yelled at. He is completely right though, I just don't want it to be the case.
"Actually I don't need to assist in jackshit. Kyoko made it clear my help was optional with everyone around to hear. That means everyone is aware I have that option. Also, seeing as I have no friends due to my bratty personality, nobody can be surprised if I am being bratty about helping so there. Can you stop panicking, please? I've got this all figured out cutie."
He looks utterly flabbergasted at that final word.
"What did you just call me?"
"Are you going deaf?"
I chuckle and push myself off of his grip. He narrows his eyes at me in irritation but ultimately glances away for a moment before turning around to continue walking, avoiding facing me.
I catch up to him again as he strides through the corridors. I still don't know where we are going. Surely we won't just walk around in circles until the trial.
"So... where are we going?"
He sighs.
"I genuinely don't know. You did make a good point back there."
"Look at me being smart! Anyways, why don't we go to the bar? Nobody will be there and it'll be nice to relax there for possibly the final time."
"Yeah... that's quite true. Lead the way then."
We walk side by side in silence downstairs to the cafeteria. To no surprise everyone was running around the first floor, searching dorms so nobody was downstairs.
We enter the bar, he sits on a stall while I enter behind it.
"You should allow yourself to have a drink. You've earned it that's for sure."
"No matter how many times you'll insist, I still don't like the taste of alcohol. I'll make you something though. What do you want?"
"Tch. Something not too strong. It's only the afternoon."
I pause and have a little think before an idea pops into my mind. I begin searching in the freezer and then for a glass. Pour a bit of rum...
"A daiquiri, because you need a little sweetness anyways."
"You made that quick. And I don't need a little sweetness, I've got enough."
"Aww was that a me reference?"
I tease. It's gotta be, surely.
"No, if anything I'd describe you as sour. I meant I have enough sweetness because none at all is enough. So stop trying to be cutesy and annoying."
I give a smug smile and pop a Pepsi Max open. (😋)
I exit from behind the bar, can in hand, and sit on a stool beside him. He sips on the drink in silence.
"I don't really drink fruity cocktails. Too girly."
"Wow, that's rude."
I take a sip of my own drink before leaning my head against his shoulder from the side.
"I notice him tense up momentarily, probably not expecting the sudden closeness.
"But this does taste nice though. Did you actually earn the title of Ultimate Bartender? Have you got any genuine talent in that field at all or is it made up?"
"No, I genuinely earned my place here."
"So why did you start this whole game? What went wrong that you subjected all of us to this torture?"
Even though the sentence sounded mean, there was no malice in his voice. I don't really feel like answering that. It's one of the last free days here at this school, I don't want to waste it with some meaningless talk of motive. What's done is done now and he doesn't need to know. So I just shrug in response.
We remain in a comfortable silence, just drinking our drinks while I rest on his shoulder with my free arm dangling beside me. I feel something brush against my hand though, nothing significant. Maybe I'm just itchy or something? But then I feel gentle, anxious taps.
I move my head and look down to see a pretty pathetic attempt at someone trying to hold my hand.
I chuckle internally as I look over at him before placing the side of my head back on his shoulder and taking his hand in mine.
"For someone as callous and intelligent as you, you sure can be a loser."
"Shut up."
