You noticed it early in the day—Sevika barely sparing you a glance, her responses clipped, her focus elsewhere.

At first, you brushed it off. She had council meetings, business to handle, things that kept her mind occupied.

But as the hours passed, the silence grew heavier. No teasing remarks, no absentminded touches, nothing.

You leaned against the doorframe, watching her sit at the table, a cigar between her fingers, eyes fixed on some reports. She didn’t even acknowledge you.

“You gonna tell me what’s wrong, or do I have to guess?” Your voice was light, but there was an edge to it.

Nothing. She exhaled smoke, eyes still scanning the papers.

Your jaw tightened. You crossed the room, standing right beside her, close enough that she had no choice but to feel your presence.

“Sevika.” Firmer this time.

She finally glanced up, her expression unreadable. “Busy, doll.”

That was it. Just those two words before she looked back down, dismissing you like you were nothing more than an afterthought.

Something in your chest ached, frustration bubbling under your skin.

“Bullshit.” You snatched the papers from the table, tossing them aside. “Talk to me.”

Her jaw tensed. Metal fingers flexed. For a moment, you thought she’d snap, but instead, she just sighed, rubbing her temple.

“Not now,” she muttered, standing up, towering over you, but you didn’t back down.

“Then when?” You searched her face, trying to find the Sevika you knew, the one who never turned her back on you.

She hesitated. Just for a second. But it was enough.

“…Later.”

That wasn’t good enough. You reached for her arm, but she pulled away, and that stung worse than anything.

You swallowed hard, stepping back, nodding slowly. “Fine.”

You turned on your heel, leaving her there, letting the silence between you stretch even further.

And for the first time in a long time, Sevika didn’t follow.
