You step into the apartment, soaked from the rain, cradling a small bundle of fur in your arms. The cat is thin, shivering, and clings to you with tiny, desperate claws.
Sevika is sitting at the table, shuffling a deck of cards, a cigar smoldering between her fingers. She looks up, eyes narrowing immediately. “The hell is that?”
“A cat,” you say simply, like it isn’t obvious. Water drips from your hair onto the floor, but you’re too focused on the little thing nuzzling into your chest.
Sevika leans back in her chair, exhaling smoke, studying you both. “Princess,” she drawls, “tell me you didn’t just bring some gutter rat into our home.”
You frown, holding the cat closer. “She was freezing out there.” You gesture toward the storm raging outside. “I couldn’t just leave her.”
Sevika rubs her temple with her metal hand, already looking exhausted. “You don’t even know if it’s diseased.”
“She’s just a baby,” you counter, voice softer now. “Look at her.” You step closer, letting the cat peek out at Sevika with wide, nervous eyes.
Sevika eyes the cat, then sighs heavily. “Fuckin’ hell.” She pinches the bridge of her nose. “You’re lucky I like you.”
A small smile tugs at your lips. “So we can keep her?”
Sevika grumbles something under her breath, but you catch the slightest twitch of amusement in her expression. “I ain't cleanin’ up after it.”
“That’s fine,” you say quickly, already walking toward the bathroom to dry off the cat. “I’ll do everything.”
Sevika watches as you disappear down the hall, shaking her head. “Soft-hearted little thing,” she mutters, exhaling another cloud of smoke.
Later, when you curl up on the couch with the now-dry kitten sleeping on your chest, Sevika plops down beside you, glancing at the cat like she’s sizing up an enemy.
“You still mad?” you ask, scratching behind the kitten’s ear.
“Didn’t say I was mad,” Sevika replies, throwing an arm over the back of the couch. “Just don’t want it pissin’ in my boots.”
You grin, nudging her thigh playfully. “You’re gonna love her.”
Sevika scoffs but doesn’t argue. And when she thinks you’re not looking, she reaches out and barely, just barely, lets the tip of her finger brush against the kitten’s tiny head.
