"Oh my god, no, the veggie platter should be here," Daisy snapped at Kerry. Kerry rolled her forest green eyes and retorted, "You're so incompetent! It should be next to the plates, because people will grab the veggies first!"
The girls bickered while Shayna and her parents set out stacks of paper plates, plastic cups, and piles of forks.
"Girls, could you please stop that? The team will be here any second," Mrs. Blackburn chided. Daisy whipped around to face her mother, making her tank top babydoll dress flutter around her mid-thighs. It's green tea-colored cloth bounced whenever she moved, and the flouncy skirt made her legs look like they went on for miles. Kerry clearly minded, becoming even more high-strung than usual.
"I'm not doing anything," Daisy huffed, blowing a strand of hair that came out of the twists out of her face. "Kerry's the one getting all bossy."
"Excuse me?" Kerry flared up, taking a step closer to her sister. Although Daisy was usually taller than her, Kerry towered over her sister because of the three inch gold gladiator sandal heels she wore. Daisy didn't stand a chance in her heeled brown ankle boots.
"Hey, hey, what's up?" a voice broke in. Kerry instantly composed herself and bounced over to the new arrival. "Hey, Kurt," she cooed.
Shayna was impressed at how put together Kurt looked. He was wearing a dark blue polo and straight-legged blue jeans. Suddenly, Shayna felt a pang of worry. Was I the only one who didn't dress up for this? she fretted. Her worry vanished when she saw the rest of the team arrive, in tee-shirts sporting bands or teams and broken-into jeans.
"Hey, Blake," she said as her boyfriend draped his arm around her. Blake gave her his brightest grin and said, "Hey, Shaye. You look great."
Shayna glanced down at her casual sundress and battered gray Converse. Although she couldn't see it, she knew that her hurriedly put together ponytail wasn't exactly gorgeous. "Seriously?" she asked in uneasiness. Blake smiled in amusement and nudged her. "Yeah, seriously."
"Oh." Shayna wasn't sure how to respond. She tugged on her long, grown out bangs self consciously, all too aware that Blake's unwavering gaze was on her.
"Let's eat," Shayna suggested, mostly to break the silence. Blake gladly agreed, and the two got their lunch. They sat at the overcrowded picnic benches and ate, chatting with the rest of the team.
"Where's Kerry and Daisy?" Shayna asked in between bites of her chips.
"They went off to the stream or something," one of the teammates replied with his mouth full of hot dog.
"Oh? In heels and full makeup? Ugh, they'll be like melting clowns when they get back," Shayna muttered. Blake cackled when he heard that.
"What's so funny?" Daisy's voice made them all jump.
"Where's Kerry?" Kurt asked. "Didn't you go down to the stream?"
"What? No, I went to go take some pictures. She said she wanted some time by herself. Has she not come back yet?" Daisy's voice had a hint of worry in it.
"I don't know. I'll run down to check if she's at the stream--" Kurt began, starting to stand, but Daisy placed her hands on his shoulders and had him sit again.
"I'm sure she's fine. You know how touchy she gets when she wants to be alone," Daisy said, looking like she needed to say it out loud to convince herself. Kurt shook her off and jumped away. He stared into Daisy's hazy green eyes and said firmly, "NO, I have to find her. Please let go, Daisy. I need to find Kerry."
Daisy's eyes looked like a stormy mess of greens and grays. However, she managed to grit her teeth and spit out, "Fine. But don't say I didn't tell you to stay."
