They broke apart, only connected by their linked fingertips.
"Now we really have to go," Kurt whispered, his breath making Shayna's hair flutter. She broke out into a smile and giggled, "Yeah, we do."
They walked back to their street, coming to Kurt's house first. "I'll see you at school, I guess," Shayna sighed. Kurt shook his head and said, "I'll walk you to your house."
Knowing she'd lose if she argued, Shayna allowed him to walk her a few houses down the block. They came to another stop in front of her big yellow house with the white shutters that were never closed.
They were closed tonight.
Shayna didn't know what to make of it. She hadn't even known they could close. She glanced at Kurt to see if he noticed. He was staring at the house, his brows crinkled, trying to figure out what was out of place.
"They're closed," was the only thing he said. Then he turned away and walked back the way they had come and the darkness of the street at night swallowed him up.
