Jaehyun barely had time to settle at his desk before his phone buzzed with an incoming call. He stared at the screen, already knowing what was coming.
Mom.
He sighed, bracing himself before answering.
"When were you planning to tell me about this?" his mother's voice came through, both frantic and borderline accusatory.
Jaehyun pinched the bridge of his nose. "Good morning to you too, Mom."
"Don't you good morning me! Your aunt called me the second she saw you with that girl! Your fiancée!" She practically gasped the word like it was a scandal. "When did this happen? How long have you been hiding her?"
Jaehyun leaned back in his chair, staring at the ceiling. He was so not in the mood for this. "You know... love just works in mysterious ways."
His mother wasn't buying it. "Love? Don't try to smooth talk your way out of this, Jaehyun."
Here it comes. The full interrogation. Jaehyun barely had a chance to breathe before his mother launched into a rapid-fire assault of questions—Where did you meet? How long have you been together? Why didn't you introduce her sooner? Do you even know her parents?
Jaehyun groaned, already exhausted. "Mom, I really don't have time for this right now. I'm at work."
His mother wasn't done. "Fine. Then you'll explain everything to us face-to-face."
Jaehyun frowned. "What do you mean—"
"Bring her on Friday."
His heart stopped. "Friday?"
"Yes. Your grandmother's birthday dinner. Everyone will be there, and they all want to meet your fiancée."
Jaehyun sat up so fast he nearly knocked over his coffee. "Wait, what? That's not necessary. Let's not—"
His mother cut him off. "Of course it's necessary! She's about to become part of the family, Jaehyun. She deserves to meet the others."
Jaehyun felt his soul leave his body. "The others?"
And just like that, the call ended. His mother had hung up on him. Jaehyun stared blankly at his phone, his mind reeling. A slow realization dawned on him. He had to bring Mora. To his family home. On his grandmother's birthday.
From the copy room, a loud, frustrated voice echoed through the office.
"WHAT THE FUUUUUCK!"
Heads turned. Someone outside the room coughed awkwardly.
Jaehyun slumped against the wall, staring into the abyss.
