"Dad?"
After my sister utters the word the whole room suddenly freezes making me completely forget what has just happened a second ago.
For a moment, no one breathes. No one moves. The weight of that single word crashes down onto me, echoing in my ears. My heart pounds wildly in my chest, and I feel Anastasia's breathing start to slow down.
"What did you just say?" I whisper, my voice barely audible above the hum of tension vibrating through the room.
Anastasia's face is pale, her lips trembling as she stares at Jacaré, who looks just as shell-shocked. His mouth opens and closes wordlessly, like he's struggling to process the accusation hanging heavy in the air.
"Dad," she repeats, stronger this time, more certain, and the word slices through me like a blade.
Jacaré takes a step back like the ground beneath him has shifted. His gun that he has now picked up in haste hangs limply at his side, his knuckles white against the black metal. "No," he says, but his voice lacks conviction. "No. That's impossible."
"How the hell did you find us?" My mother finally speaks, her voice trembling but fierce as she takes a step forward. There's something raw and broken in her expression—something I don't understand.
Luca's fists are still clenched at his sides, but his anger towards King has cooled. His jaw ticks, and his eyes never leave Jacaré, as if he's piecing together a puzzle.
"Mum," I breathe out, a thousand questions swirling in my mind. "What are you saying? Is it true?"
My mother's face softens as she turns toward me, guilt etched into every line. "I never wanted you to know," she admits quietly. "I thought I was protecting you. I thought... if you never found out, you'd be safe."
"Safe from what?" Anastasia demands, her voice shaking with fury. "From our own father?"
Wait?
Our father?
It had never occurred to me in a million years that Ana and I could have the same father as I had unknowingly thought both of our fathers were deadbeats, a story that our mother had constantly drilled into our ears. But at the possibility of this man...no.... one of Luca's men being our father, my father, makes my heart constrict like it's never done before.
