Author's Note: Meanwhile, in the Soul Scanner...

Gonna let y'all know ahead of time that things may feel like it's dragging at the beginning, much like how it feels when your noggin is in a downward spiral and circling in on itself before something snaps you out of it (totally not a hint of what's to come what are you talking about-?)

It won't last long, I promise! I just wanted to let you know what to expect because I didn't want to cut a single segment of what I put together in the middle of this chapter...it demonstrated what I was trying to convey WAY too well to be cut down.

Things will pick up again, don't worry! Just bear with me and hopefully, you'll enjoy what I've been cooking up!

Trigger Warning(s): Uncensored language, both safe and unsafe uses of weaponry, implied racism described in very simple terms for a child to understand, examples of internalized racism, implied off-screen murder, implied off-screen character death, references to past physical/magical violence against another character, references to past suicidal ideation, references to past trauma, references and depictions of past child abuse/endangerment (both physical and emotional), panic attacks, psychological/emotional breakdowns, vomiting, body horror (I THINK it counts as body horror? Gonna list it as a trigger warning just in case. You'll know what I mean when it comes up), depictions of self harm, the kind of trauma that comes with moral injury over realizing how much of an abusive person you've become towards someone you love, and the kind of trauma that comes with finally confronting someone that deeply scares you about how much they've hurt you. Viewer discretion is advised.

"HEY DADDY! I FOUND IT!"

"WOA WOA WOA! Easy there buddy! You shouldn't go running around with that!" Rune's father said with a nervous chuckle, gently taking the rifle from his hands as he ruffled his hair.

Rune tilted his head to the side ever so slightly, looking at his father with inquisitive eyes.

"Why do you always get so weird around this thingy daddy? You use it all the time, don't you? What's the big whoop?"

His father raised an eyebrow at the question, setting the rifle aside before bending down to Rune's level; putting a hand on his shoulder to get his son's attention.

"Because this thingy here can be really dangerous if you aren't careful. And you're a little too young to use it properly." he explained.

"How come?"

His father thought for a moment, trying to find the right words to use in his answer before looking back down at Rune.

"Well you see, this thingy is called a rifle. It's a type of gun."

Rune's face scrunched slightly, the gears clearly turning in his 5-year old head as he tried to comprehend what his father was saying.

"What's a gun?"

His father seemed almost relieved to hear that question, a soft smile coming to his face as he began to explain further.

"A gun is a type of weapon. It's a tool that's used to incapacitate other living things."

"Incap...incap...asit...hate?" Rune tried, his father chuckling at his efforts.

"Incapacitate. It basically means it's a tool you use when you need to prevent another living thing from getting too close to you if it gets too dangerous and to help you render a living thing into a non-living state in order to gather food from it if you need it to survive. That's what I used it for sometimes anyway." he described, causing Rune to look slightly confused.
