"Ashton, go to your room," Keefe said with finality.
Ashton rolled his eyes and stomped up the stairs, slamming the door to his room.
"That boy is on thin ice-" Keefe cut himself off when he saw my expression. "What?"
"I cannot believe you just handled that the way you did," I burst out.
"What?" Keefe asked, his eyebrows knitting together.
"That!" I sputtered, gesturing towards where Ashton had just stormed off. "Your son just admitted to cheating on an exam, which he wasn't sorry about, and all you do is send him to his room?"
Keefe's stare hardened. "Yes."
"Yes?" I practically shouted, my face blazing. "Do you not understand how serious this is? This situation calls for true discipline!"
"Sophi-"
"You can't truly think that's enough, do you?" I huffed.
There was a pause of silence where neither of us said anything.
"Are you done?" he asked softly.
I opened my mouth to spout another defense before he leveled me with a look. I needed to let him talk.
"I understand what you're saying. I do. But do you really think punishing him is going to solve the problem? When my parents punished me, it only ever made things worse," he explained.
Oh. Oh. That's why he'd handled it that way. He didn't want to turn into his father.
Which meant that I had reacted too harshly. I wasn't trying to understand his thought process; I only got angry with him.
"Keefe... I know you don't want to turn into your dad," I said, taking his hands in mine, making sure he was looking at me. "But there is a big gap between how harsh your parents were and necessary harshness. And I'm sorry that I reacted so angrily - that wasn't fair of me. But I do think you can be strict without being anything like your dad."
A pensive look overcame his face as he considered what I was saying. "I hear what you're saying. Let's have a conversation about an appropriate punishment?"
"That sounds great."
