Diana's eyes fluttered open as she slowly adjusted to the brightness in the room. Her throat was dry as she slowly looked around the room when she noticed him seated beside her.
"My baby..." She whispered silently but he just stood up,helped her sit up gently, placing a pillow behind her back and then gave her some water.
"She's fed, changed and now she's asleep," He said silently as she finished the water.
Her heart flattered at how much this man that she has just known for a few months was helping her hold everything together without necessarily her asking for it.
"I thought you left... Why are you here??" She said silently watching him as he set the glass away and sat beside her holding on to her hand while maintaining eye contact.
"I was worried about you,"
"Well you don't need to worry stranger am fine..."
"Stranger??"
"Yes stranger..."
"Do you make out with strangers??"
"It depends..."
"On what??"
"How handsome they are, "
"So am handsome..."
"I think we've established that fact already..." She said calmly and they laughed lightly.
"And you're extremely gorgeous simply breathtaking..." He said looking into her eyes then suddenly the baby cried. He took her in his arms and gently walked around the room cradling the baby until she fell asleep. Diana watched completely amazed by the fact that this man had put her baby to sleep and something flicked in her... Maybe not all men are dogs when it comes to matters of the heart. He set her gently to the baby bed then walked back to her as she smiled faintly.
"You don't have to do this for me..." She said calmly.
"But I want to, " He said calmly holding her hands.
"Why?? I can't give you what you are hunting for..."
"Hunting for?? That's an interesting choice of words..."
"But it's true,"
"What makes you think you it's true??"
"No one actively flirts or show interest with pregnant ladies unless they want something..."
"You do know some men are attracted to pregnant women right??"
"Just like you??"
"Am attracted to what's real,"
"You?? Real?? This is interesting..."
"I am... In my line of work it's so hard for ladies to see past the money and power I wield... They just... They don't see me."
"What if am like them??"
"You aren't,,"
"How can you be so sure??" She said calmly and he traced his fingers to the side of her face tucking stray hair behind her ear.
"Because I see you... Behind the scrubs behind your title behind your wealth behind your lack of trust... I see you..." He whispered silently as she smiled.
"What do you see??"
"A beautiful lady that has been hurt so many times... You put your walls so high to protect yourself and now your baby so that the past won't repeat itself..."
"So you are pyschic??"
"I just know how to read people..." He said and she smiled lightly.
She knew he wasn't wrong.
Her mother betrayed her.
Her sister betrayed her.
Her fiance betrayed her.
Her best friend betrayed her.
It was like a curse that she was only meant to attract traitors.
But..
Maybe,
Just maybe, this time the heavens have decided to give her a rest.
She looked at the handsome gentleman who was here fulfilling responsibilities that were not his to bear and her heart flustered. Her mind was trying to find anything to prove he was just like all the others but her heart was slowly warming up to the idea of him.
"My husband will be back..." She said silently and he laughed lightly careful not to wake the baby.
"Is this a way of you kicking me out??" He said calmly meeting her eyes and she rolled her eyes.
"Am not kicking you out..."
"That's good then because am really curious to see the man that couldn't even show up for the birth of his daughter..."
"He was busy–"
"Too busy to not be around for the first hours of his daughter?? Really?? That's the type of person you gave a tittle to??"
"He probably had cold feet–"
"Cold feet?? Am sorry but no that is not even an excuse..."
He's right.
It wasn't an excuse.
"You know a lot of men get cold feet right??"
"No!! Not men... Boys. Boys get cold feet when they realize they are unable to step up and be right for the children they fathered... Men will take it as it is, plan on making it as stable as possible for the child... Not get cold feet as if they didn't have months to prepare!!"
"So in short you just called my husband a boy??" She said calmly watching him.
"Yes... He's a boy..." He said calmly maintaining eye contact.
"That's bold of you to say–" She said calmly and he moved closer to her.
"But am not wrong and you know it... You are everything any man can ever want, you are a daring piece of heaven... Your smile... Anyone would want you to even look their way but you can't see that because you have always been made to feel less by the people you have around in the name of love... Let me show you what it's like to be loved, let me show what it's like to have someone lay down their life for you, let me show you what a healthy family looks like with me, you and the baby... Let me show you what it's like to have a man devote his entire life to make you happy..." He said calmly and intentionally while maintaining eye contact.
"You can't handle me Gio, I am not your usual type of girl..." She said silently the distance between them slowly becoming non existent.
"No you aren't, you are a woman of class and standards... Trust me babe I can handle you perfectly fine..." He said firmly a light smile flashing.
"I don't think so..." She said calmly and he chuckled leaning in making the distance between each other completely non existent.
"I can bet you that I will do a far much better job than all the boys you've dated..." He said against her lips and she chuckled lightly.
"Stop saying boys... It sounds disgusting, " She said before their lips locked moving in a perfect rhythm as if they were made for each other. She traced her fingers to the back of his head deepening the kiss further as he held onto her intending to take his time with the lips that have him addicted. It was as if the whole world just stopped existing.
It was perfect.
And it scared her.
She broke off the kiss looking into his eyes to catch any sign that would tell her she was making the biggest mistake of her life but there was none. Nothing but sincerity.
Then the door opened.
