The house was dim, all the lights were out but the one in the nursery nightlight that spilled into the hallway. Sat on the couch, legs curled beneath her, baby monitor beside her as she sipped her hot tea. Baby Mariana was asleep warm, peaceful and swaddled like a dream she never thought she could have. Earlier in the day her resident Dr Malik had come to visit her bringing her a baby crib, a lot of gifts and of course a VIP client medical case that Lanwar the CEO of the hospital wanted her to handle. She took the file and went through it but her head was still flooded with him.

As if on cue, her phone lit up on the armrest beside her.

She didn't move right away.

But her heart did.

His name.

Just his name.

Still up?

She stared at it.

And something deep in her chest fluttered, small but undeniable.

She picked up the phone, thumb hovering over the keyboard, then paused. Bit her lip. Tucked her hair behind her ear. Exhaled softly.

Then she typed back.

Barely. Everything okay?

Seconds later,

I need your company.

She blinked.

Sat up straighter.

Rough night?

No response for a moment.

Then,

I need something real after everything else. You still have room on that couch?

She stared at the screen, heart slightly racing not from confusion but from the quiet certainty of what he meant.

Not sex. Not need. Not chaos.

Just presence.

Hers.

She typed slowly.

You always ask like the answer might change.

Three dots. Then,

Because I wouldn't forgive myself if I ever assumed I deserved it.

She smiled lightly feeling his heart.

And in that moment, all she wanted... was to hold him.

Door's unlocked.

She turned off the screen taking a sip of her tea as she resumed going through the files. She was so engrossed in work and her tea was almost done by the time she heard a soft knock on the door.

She didn't rush.

She just stood, walked to the door, and opened it like it was always meant to open for him.

And there he stood.

Coat over his arm. Shirt collar loose. Eyes tired but drawn to her like she was the only truth left in the world.

They didn't speak.

She just stepped aside and he walked in.

She closed the door behind him. Turned.

And before she could say anything he pulled her into him. Not harsh. Not rushed.

But needy.

He buried his face in the crook of her neck, arms wrapping tight around her waist.
