The lunch bell rang, signaling a brief escape from the chaos of the school day. The halls buzzed with the sound of students rushing to the cafeteria, but Abigail had no interest in lunch today. Instead, she found herself walking toward the music room, her heart a little heavier than usual.
She had spent the last few days thinking about everything that had happened. The news of Emma's pregnancy. The way their worlds had shifted. The way Emma was trying so hard to keep everything together, hiding her fears and doubts behind that confident smile. And Abigail? She just wanted to hold on to Emma. To hold on to whatever they had left before everything changed too much.
As she reached the door to the music room, she hesitated for just a moment, then pushed it open quietly, stepping inside. The room was empty—just the soft echo of the last notes the students had played before they left for lunch. Abigail's heart beat a little faster as she glanced around the room. It felt like home to Emma, this space full of music and memories. And now, it felt like it was hers too, a place where she could find Emma, no matter how tangled things were between them.
The door clicked shut behind her, and she locked it—just to be sure. She needed a moment with Emma, a real one. No interruptions. No pretending.
The soft rustle of papers, the faint hum of instruments, all blended into the background as Abigail stepped closer. She found Emma standing near the piano, absently tapping the keys with one hand as she looked down at a sheet of music.
Abigail's breath caught at the sight of her, the way Emma's brow furrowed in concentration, her hair falling softly around her face. It hit her, in that moment, just how much she loved this girl. Not the idea of her, not the dream of a perfect future, but the real Emma—the messy, complicated, beautiful person she had always known.
She took a few steps forward, her heart thumping in her chest, before she slipped her arms around Emma's waist from behind. Emma's body stiffened for a moment, and Abigail held her tighter, pressing her face into Emma's back.
"I love you," Abigail whispered, her voice quiet but full of emotion.
Emma's body relaxed slightly at the words, but she didn't turn around right away. Instead, she just stood there, her fingers still lightly resting on the piano keys. "Abs... what's going on?" she asked softly, her voice trembling just a little.
Abigail kissed the back of Emma's neck, her lips lingering there for a moment before she spoke again. "I just needed you to know. I know things are... complicated right now. But I love you. I've always loved you."
Emma's hand dropped from the piano keys, and she finally turned in Abigail's arms, her eyes searching Abigail's face like she was trying to find something she wasn't sure she could name. For a moment, neither of them said anything. They just stood there, their eyes locked, both feeling the weight of everything that had happened, and everything that still hung between them.
"I'm scared, Abs," Emma admitted quietly, her voice barely above a whisper. "I don't know what to do. I don't know how to fix everything."
Abigail gently cupped Emma's face in her hands, brushing a thumb across her cheek. "You don't have to fix anything, Emma. We'll figure it out. Together. We always do."
Emma's eyes filled with something unspoken—relief, maybe, or hope—and she finally let herself lean into Abigail's touch. "I don't deserve you," she murmured, her voice thick with emotion.
Abigail shook her head, her forehead resting against Emma's. "You don't have to be perfect. You just have to be you. And I'll be right here with you, every step of the way."
