The police station had taken longer than any of them expected.
By the time they got home, the sun had already started sinking lower in the sky, casting long shadows across the driveway and turning the sky shades of orange and gold. Normally, Abigail loved sunsets. They reminded her to slow down. To breathe.
Today she barely noticed it.
Her entire body felt drained.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
The officer they had spoken with had been professional, patient, and reassuring. He had listened carefully, asked questions, and taken notes without interrupting. He had explained the process of documenting everything and what steps could be taken if the behavior continued.
Abigail had hated every second of it.
Not because of him.
Because saying everything out loud made it real.
Every uncomfortable interaction.
Every time she saw Professor Shields standing somewhere she shouldn't have been.
Every time she showed up unexpectedly.
Every time Abigail convinced herself it was probably nothing.
Every time she told herself she was overreacting.
Every time she chose not to make a big deal out of it.
By the time she finished telling the story, it sounded completely different than it had in her head.
Worse.
Much worse.
The officer had thought so too.
So had the dean.
So had Emma.
So had Megan.
So had Ashley.
That realization sat heavily in her chest the entire drive home.
The moment they got back to the house, Emma practically ordered her onto the couch.
"You need to sit."
Abigail looked at her.
"I'm sitting."
"You sat down while standing."
Ashley immediately pointed.
"She's got you there."
Emma shot both of them a look.
Neither cared.
Megan disappeared into the kitchen and returned a few minutes later carrying water bottles and snacks like she was preparing for a natural disaster.
Nobody argued.
The four of them ended up spending most of the evening together in the living room. The television played quietly in the background while nobody actually watched it.
Every once in a while Ashley would make a joke.
Every once in a while Megan would roll her eyes.
Every once in a while Emma would check on Abigail.
And every single time Abigail looked at her phone, hoping there wasn't another message.
Thankfully, there wasn't.
But the damage had already been done.
Nobody slept particularly well that night.
