One Year Later

The penthouse was loud.

Very loud.

Not because of music.

Not because of guests.

Not because of a party.

The noise came from a very energetic one-year-old little girl who had recently discovered that running was possible and had apparently decided she never wanted to stop doing it.

"Get back here!"

Laughter echoed through the penthouse.

Tiny footsteps raced across hardwood floors.

Then another squeal.

Then a crash that sounded suspiciously like a stuffed animal hitting a lamp.

Then Emma's voice.

"Oh no."

Another squeal.

Then:

"ABIGAIL!"

Abigail looked up from her notebook immediately. The smile arrived before she even saw what was happening because she already knew.

A second later their daughter came flying around the corner.

Tiny curls bouncing.

Tiny dress crooked.

One sock on.

One sock off.

No shoes.

Again.

She clutched Emma's phone against her chest like it was the most valuable treasure in the world.

Behind her came Emma.

Barefoot.

Out of breath.

Completely defeated.

"She took my phone."

Abigail laughed.

"How?"

"I don't know."

"You're the parent."

"I know."

"You're supposed to know."

Emma pointed dramatically.

"She's fast."

Their daughter immediately launched herself into Abigail's lap and held the phone above her head triumphantly like she'd just won an Olympic medal.

The grin on her face was identical to Emma's.

Abigail had noticed that months ago.

The smile.

The attitude.

The stubbornness.

That child was Emma's daughter through and through.

Emma crossed her arms.

"I'd like it noted that I'm being bullied in my own home."

Their daughter laughed.

Actually laughed.

As if she understood exactly what Emma had said.

Which only made Abigail laugh harder.

Eventually she rescued the phone and handed it back.

The tiny girl gasped.

Offended.
