The morning sun crept through the blinds, painting soft golden lines across the sheets. Abigail stirred first, blinking away sleep as the quiet hum of the fan from down the hall reached her ears. For a moment, she lay there, the memories of the night before flooding back the brush strokes, the scent of fresh paint, and the words she'd left waiting on the wall for Emma to see.

Beside her, Emma slept peacefully, her face half-buried in the pillow, her hand still resting over her belly like instinct. Abigail smiled, brushing a strand of hair away from her forehead.

"Good morning, beautiful," she whispered softly, though Emma didn't stir yet.

She slipped quietly out of bed, padding barefoot down the hall. The air smelled faintly of sage paint and fresh morning air. When she opened the nursery door, the fan was still running, the curtains fluttering gently in the soft breeze.

Abigail stepped inside and couldn't help but smile. The walls had dried perfectly overnight, the soft green color glowing in the morning light. It felt calm, welcoming, and full of life exactly how she hoped it would. The tiny space she had left for their message still stood untouched, her writing clear and steady against the wall.

She read the words again, her heart swelling.

For our little one, may you always feel loved, safe, and free to grow into whoever you want to be.

Love always, Mommy Abigail.

The sight of it brought a quiet warmth to her chest. She took a slow breath and turned off the fan, letting the room settle into silence.

Behind her, she heard the faint creak of the bedroom door.

"Abby?" Emma's sleepy voice floated down the hall.

Abigail turned, smiling softly. "Good morning, mama."

Emma appeared in the doorway, hair tousled, one hand rubbing her eyes. "You're up early," she murmured with a small yawn.

Abigail walked toward her, slipping her hands gently onto Emma's hips. "Couldn't sleep long," she said softly. "I had something I wanted to show you."

Emma blinked a few times, her curiosity waking her up. "Show me?"

Abigail nodded and took her hand. "Come on."

She led her carefully down the hall, stopping at the nursery door. Emma tilted her head, noticing the faint smell of paint. "Wait... you didn't," she said, a slow smile spreading across her face.

Abigail just grinned. "I did."

She opened the door and let Emma step inside first.

The sunlight poured across the room, bouncing off the freshly painted sage-green walls. It was soft and beautiful exactly what they'd pictured together the day before. Emma covered her mouth with her hand, her eyes instantly glassy.

"Abby..." she breathed. "You did all this?"

Abigail wrapped her arms around her from behind, her chin resting on Emma's shoulder. "All four walls. I wanted to surprise you before you woke up."

Emma looked around, her free hand brushing over the smooth paint. "It's perfect," she whispered. "It's everything I imagined."

Abigail smiled against her hair. "I thought about you the whole time. I wanted it to be ready for when you came in here with me."

Emma turned in her arms, her eyes glistening. "You stayed up all night doing this?"

Abigail nodded, brushing her thumb along Emma's jaw. "I did. I made sure the window stayed open and the fan was on, so it'd air out before morning. I didn't want you or the baby breathing in the fumes."
